Flames Snap Streak - Go Wild in Shootout

After an atrocious call from the referee (since when did the puck bouncing off the glove of the goalie, flipping in mid-air constitute a whistle for a dead puck?) and a gritty, hard-nosed effort by the Wild, the Flames escaped Minnesota with a 3-2 win in a shootout.

Wait, the Flames won a shootout...against the Wild?

A quick game summary will tell you the Flames showed up a lot more than they did the night before in Nashville. I was very impressed with the play of David Moss. The Flames first goal was a great effort by Moss and with that, we were up 1-0. Just minutes later, the Wild tie it up on a PP goal from the point (Burns I do believe). With Radivojevic causing havoc in the crease (I do believe Regehr pushed him into Kipper), Burns potted one past the screened netminder. 1-1 going into the 2nd intermission.

In the 3rd period, Huselius scored the go ahead goal. It looked to me he had about 4 minutes to decide what to do with the empty net. He roofed it (I swear it looked like it hit the crossbar) and with, we're up 2-1. Back to a Wild PP, Foster ties it up with a canon from the point. We're going to OT.

OT: 4 shots per team and nothing decided.

Shootout: Up first, Kristian Huselius. The announcers on TSN describe him as taking the scenic route into the net but he makes his move on Backstrom and scores! For the Wild: Koivu. He seems to lose his stride and even though Kipper missed the poke-check, he makes the save. Up next: Phaneuf. Taking a page out of Rolston's book, Phaneuf comes in and just tees up a slap shot into the chest of Backstrom. It looks like it hurts but job done I guess. For the Wild: Rolston. By now we all know he will take the massive slap shot, and why not, he's accurate and it's worked on Kipper before. This time? Rolston misses to his right. Up for the Flames: Iginla. With the goal he can get us the 2 points. What does he do? Roofs it - Flames win.

Big 2 points and bring on the Kings Friday night!
