Ryan Getzlaf broke a team record for assists (52) by a center in a season last night on a power play goal by Doug Weight. The record was previously held in duplicate by Andy McDonald for the past 2 seasons.
This stat is particularly interesting. Steve Rucchin had 38 in 2002-03, Fedorov had 34 in 2003-04. You would think that with the role of a centerman, they would rack up the assists especially since the league hands out 2nd assists to just about anyone.
Getzlaf has continued to improve on his already impressive stats centering the first line next to long time linemate Corey Perry, and a rotation of Todd Bertuzzi and Chris Kunitz. Getzlaf currently has points in 8 games (2-7=9) and 15 of the last 16 home games (5-8=23).
Getzlaf has 74 points (22-52) total. He is on pace for an 84-point season, a 26 point increase over last season's 2nd line campaign. Getzlaf also leads the team in +/- with a +24.
Corey Perry, side-lined with a torn MCL, is the Ducks' leading goal scorer with 29 on the season. Ducks only have three 20+ goal scorers (Getzlaf 22, Kunitz 20). Compared to last season, they had 5. But Teemu Selanne had 48 on the season which nearly doubled the next closest player, Dustin Penner. So essentially, six players with 20+ goals.
The Ducks are counting on Getzlaf, Kunitz, Selanne, and Bertuzzi to step up the offense for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs with Perry sidelined for at least 5 more weeks.

Here's to Big Bert stepping up and going on a scoring streak that carries over into the playoffs. I'm talking about a 2 ppg type scoring barrage.
Lately, Getzlaf has been playing like he FINALLY realizes he is the man on this team. It's hard when you're surrounded by a lot of H-O-F veterans, but I think he's starting to get that he's going to be the leader (and captain) in a very short time. Maybe it was Perry's injury that gave him this realization...I don't know. I just wish he would SHOOT MORE! He always seems like he's trying to make that one last move and then the D catches him and gets a stick in the lane.
Definitely the future captain of this team. He is beginning to realize how much potential he reall has. He's been responsible in both ends and he's been very effective for us. He's rated the 5th best at the center position in the entire league by TSN
