More cuts for the deep ducks roster after last night's game. Included was goalie
Jean-Philippe Levasseur who I thought looked decent but needs to work on his in-close game. He was rattled when there was traffic in the crease, and didn't handle the sides of the net very well.
The two most promising Defensemen for the Ducks,
Brian Salcido and
Brendan Mikkelson also will leave Anaheim today. Mikkelson did not have a good game last night, he often looked glaringly out of place.
Ross Lupaschuk,
Michal Birner, and
John de Gray also head to John Wayne Airport.
On my list of "sad to see you go" are
Petteri Wirtanen and
Eric Boguniecki. Wirtanen seems like a player that could easily have a break-out season if given a chance on the big boy's team. Born in Finland, he has hands like butter and is very fast. To me, this might be a good opportunity for one Finnish Flash to mentor another Finnish spark. Just saying.
Boguniecki is the consummate underdog. He's been a fringe NHLer for several seasons, and given many a fair chance to remain on a NHL team. But with this cut it seems that Boguniecki has some serious thinking to do: continue to guide rookies from the AHL to the NHL, or hang up the skates. His last full season in the NHL was 2002-03 with the Blues where he tallied 49 points (22+27). His production dropped off significantly when he was traded to Pittsburgh in 2005-06 season.
I say this because he leaves behind a slew of forwards that all have a decent shot at making the revolving door of the fourth line this season. The fact that he barely got ice time this pre-season is obvious.
One of my favorite rookie players is
Brett Festerling. Last night was a pretty good game for Uncle Fester. I hope he makes the roster, but more likely that
Ken Klee will at least start the season instead.
Quick thoughts.
