San Jose Sharks fans learned last year exactly why you don't want to win the President's Trophy (unless you're the Red Wings). Since the trophy's inception in the 1980s, no team has won a Stanley Cup in the same season as earning the President's Trophy for the first time in franchise history. Good news for Sharks fans, only one team has failed to win the Cup in the same season as it's second President's Trophy (oddly enough, that would be Detroit).
But there seems to be a new curse emerging. The Outdoor curse. Of the six teams that have participated in regular-season outdoor games, only two have made it to the Cup finals in the same season. Neither of those teams managed to win the best-of-seven series.
I'll give it a couple more seasons before we call it official, but if the fad continues it won't be long before the long line of NHL teams wanting to host the winter classic disappears.
Speaking of the Winter Classic, I've got a brilliant idea for 2011: Dallas at Minnesota. The Stars could skate out in some classic Northstars jerseys (they still own the rights Minnesota fans) and the Wild could design something new based on something old as Detroit did in 2009. The background would be the newly constructed TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota.
I think it's important that we see two Western Conference teams next year, because if not the league will run out of Eastern Conference teams to showcase. They've already used four of 15.
Other ideas would be to relive the 1991 outdoor game between LA and the Rangers. I don't think the game should be held on the Vegas Strip (only because it would be a regular season game) but I think Dan Craig could set up a nice sheet of ice in LA.
no worries....the Devils will NEVER be part of a winter classic....
Yeah, the league hates NJ too much...lol
Don't count the Devils out of a matchup with the Rangers at Yankee stadium. Marty Brodeur deserves a day like that in spotlight - even though as a Flyers fan he haunts me nightly!
