There is a lot of differences of opinion on who the best goalies in the league are from year to year. I dug deep into the numbers to see who the cream of the crop really has been over the last 5 years. Most of these will be expected but there may be a couple that surprise some. I pulled the stats for GAA and SV% for the last 5 years and averaged out their numbers to find the top 8 goalies in recent history. Finally I ranked them 1-8 in each category of GAA, SV%, and wins and added them up for a final ranking.
GAA SV% Wins
1. Roberto Luongo .919 2.356 190
2. Henrik Lundquist .918 2.325 180
3. Martin Brodeur .917 2.251 177
4. Tim Thomas .922 2.462 143
5. Niklas Backstrom .918 2.407 140
6. Ryan Miller .916 2.539 184
7. Tomas Vokoun .922 2.555 127
8. Ilya Bryzgalov .916 2.542 140
And the winner is Luongo. He came in with the most wins, Brodeur with the best GAA, and Thomas & Vokoun tied with the best SV%. The biggest surprise to me on this list is Tomas Vokoun. I knew he was a good goalie playing on a bad team but I didn’t think he would be among the best. A lot of Sabres fans question whether or not Miller should be considered elite or just another average goalie. This should show you that he should be mentioned with the best and not just another overpaid player. Who would you want going into the playoffs?
Next up: Is Connolly worth keeping around next season, and if so for how much?
