Okay, before I even start, I know this is totally far-fetched and would never happen in a million years and people will be jumping down my throat after they read this scenario. But the 2012 trade deadline is fast approaching and I was bored at work so I started daydreaming and came up with an exciting (and totally non-reality based) 3-way deal, including 18 bodies and four draft picks, that would totally revamp all three teams involved. It would actually help each one according to their needs while taking roster depth, salary cap issues and contract statuses of the players involved into consideration. So without further ado, here goes:
To CBJ: T. Connolly, N. Kadri, L. Schenn, M. Lombardi, J. Johnson, J. Bernier, J. Stoll, TOR 2012 1st RDP, LA 2012 2nd RDP
To LA: J. Carter, D. Brassard, N. Kulemin, S. Pahlsson, J. Gustavsson, M. Komisarek, TOR 3rd RDP
To TOR: R. Nash, A. Kopitar, D. Penner, S. Mason, G. Clitsome, CBJ 4th RDP
*Columbus adds roughly $1 million in salary, with the 29-year-old Stoll off the books next season as a UFA should they decide to not re-sign him. They receive 2 young impact d-man, a top-6 forward prospect, a young starting goalie, three roster players to fill the holes and two high picks to jumpstart their rebuild.
*Los Angeles saves roughly $1 million in salary while receiving 3 players to help their offense, a solid player for their bottom-6, a decent backup for Jonathan Quick and a veteran d-man to replace Johnson while ridding themselves of 2 of their pending UFAs.
*Toronto adds on almost $2 million of salary with Penner coming off the books as a UFA, thus allowing them to re-sign Grabovski, should they want to do so. They receive two top-6 forwards, including the #1 centre they’ve long coveted, a goalie who might benefit from a change of scenery and a young depth d-man to replace the losses of Komisarek and Schenn.
The Leafs line-up would look like this:
Lupul – Kopitar – Kessel
Nash – Grabovski – MacArthur
Penner – Bozak – Crabb/Armstrong
Boyce – Steckel – Brown
Phaneuf – Gunnarsson
Franson – Liles
Gardiner – Aulie
Clitsome
Mason – Reimer
Oh, to dream.....
