"We Screwed Up"

After eight years of this. After eight years of false promises, excuses, and mistakes. I think this is the one thing fans need to hear the most. The Edmonton Oilers have been a shining example of mediocrity for almost an entire decade. Yes, we have had the likes of Tambellini, Mactavish, and Lowe stand in front of media and say things like "obviously we aren't where we want to be," or "the fans are our top priority and we are doing everything we can to give you the best team possible."

At the end of the day all I want is to see Lowe or Mactavish say this, "We Screwed Up." "We thought we knew what was best for this team and we were wrong, and we apologize." The reason I am bringing any of this up is because of word that both Ray Shero and Dan Bylsma will be fired today. Think about that for a second, a team that had 109 points in the regular season. Edmonton had 67 points, that's 42 points more, they nearly doubled the Oilers. After losing in the second round in Game 7, to an extremely good New York Rangers, the higher ups in Pittsburgh are saying that isn't good enough.

Yet guys like Smith and Buchberger remain. Kevin Lowe still remains in office, and after a dismal season in which Eakins lead this team back into the lottery, after seemingly making strides the year before. Trotz has been fired from Nashville. Who in Edmonton wouldn't want the chance to have him as a coach?

Yes the argument can be made for continuity. Give Eakins the chance to establish a system. MacT needs more time to make changes. My point is the phrase "losing culture," has been thrown around with this team for a number of years. Normally it's used when talking about specific players.

Now it seems like that has spread into management, apathy is running rampant and the only thing I see in the future is another lottery finish.

And that's just depressing.
