Stanley Cup Finals Game 1 DFS Review

Game 1 didn’t go exactly as planned, but that’s the way it goes in DFS. Hopefully some of you fared better than I did. Let’s review the strategies and plan to make some adjustments for game 2 tonight.

What did we want to happen: After going through all the games for both the Canadiens and the Lightning we determined that this game might have more goals than most expected. We also decided to fade the Lightning’s top guns, Kucherov and Point, instead we relied on the more affordable options because of match up and ownership concerns.

What did happen: Well we got the scoring correct, the game was 5-1, more goals than most expected since the game had a goal total line of 5. However our strategy that BOTH teams would do some scoring was flawed since Montreal didn’t feel like holding up their end of the bargain. Our second strategy to fade the top Lightning stars was actually looking good through 2 periods, Kucherov and Point had a combined 1 assist going into the third period, and then well Kucherov and Point did Kucherov and Point things and they both finished with 3 point nights Kucherov 2 G and 1 A, Point 3 A.

Where to make adjustments: The strategy to play Tampa Bay’s mid tier guys wasn’t a bad strategy, Stamkos got robbed by Price and Killorn easily could’ve had his own 3 point night but hockey is a game of inches and things go this way sometimes. But the usage and opportunities were there, Stamkos tied for the team lead with 4:44 of power play time, Killorn had 2:00 on the power play and another 1:15 short handed. Killorn had 2 shots on goal and Stamkos again tied for the team lead with 3. Going forward I’m going to go back to this well but probably not for game 2, and there’s two reasons for that. The first is that Killorn has been ruled out for game 2, it’s never a good strategy to play guys that won’t be in the game, in case you didn’t know that. The second reason is that while it will always be a risk to fade Point and Kucherov in this series I believe when the series shifts to Montreal for games 3 & 4 and the Canadiens can dictate the match ups, that’s when you’ll see Danault become a star and stifle Tampa’s high powered duo.
