NHL Slate 4 After Action Review

I wanted to start doing a second daily post to hold myself accountable, this one is just to run down what I said in my breakdown posts and see how things played out. Today I covered the game environments of all three games on the slate and highlighted some of the players I liked in each game.

Chicago Blackhawks @ New Jersey Devils

Players highlighted:

Jane Koukkanen ($4,300 DK, $3,500 FD)
Koukkanen picked up 1 assist and recorded one shot on goal, he was one of our value plays on tonight’s slate, even though he didn’t light it up he surpassed what would be considered his floor in this game.

Jesper Bratt ($4,400 DK, $3,600 FD)
Bratt had an assist on the first goal taken away after the video team reviewed it and made the stat correction so he ended up with goose eggs across the board, you never want a player putting up zeros in your lineup but as another one of our value plays to save cap relief he didn’t hurt us too much.

Phillip Kurashev ($3,200 DK, $3,700 FD)
Kurashev logged just a single shot on goal, again that’s disappointing for a value play that had a top line role but not exactly out of the realm of reasonable possibilities.

This was a game I wanted to target value plays since both teams have below average defenses and I felt the scoring could swell up and allow scoring to be distributed up and down the lineup. The game reached 7 goals, hitting the over, the teams combined for 56 shots on goal and 7 power play opportunities. Hitting on 1 out of 3 low priced cap relief plays I consider a win and the game environment was exactly what I expected.

Vancouver Canucks @ Philadelphia Flyers

Players Highlighted:

Sean Couturier ($7,100 DK, $6,500 FD)
Couturier did his best preacher’s daughter impression and made us wait all night for it, but he delivered with 2 assists in the final 3 minutes of regulation. He also had a block shot on his stat sheet tonight, we would’ve like a few shots on goal to round out this performance but 2 points should’ve been solid enough for any cash game lineup to consider this a win.

Claude Giroux ($6,000 DK, $5,500 FD)
Cheese and crackers! G came through with a late goal but his night could’ve been so much bigger with 8 shots on goal this game. Still scoring a goal and hitting the 5 shots on goal bonus was definitely a fine payoff for his price tag.

Travis Konecny ($5,900 DK, $5,200 FD)
Just like his line mates Konecny made us wait all night for it but he scored deep in the third period to get on the scoresheet, he was also one shot off of the 5 shots on goal bonus but definitely delivered enough for his cap hit tonight.

Elias Pettersson ($6,700 DK, $7,200 FD)
Pettersson was one of the best plays of the night picking up 2 points, a goal and an assist, in addition to 6 shots on goal and 1 shot block for good measure. He delivered on his higher price tag and did what you expect superstar players to do, drive the play for his team.

Quinn Hughes ($5,700 DK, $6,500 FD)
After picking up a goal in the first game of the season Hughes followed it up with an assist in tonight’s contest but that’s essentially where his contributions ended, adding just one shot on goal and one blocked shot. It was a disappointing night for DFS players who put Hughes in their lineup but his price wasn’t terrible and could have been overcome, still this is an L for the breakdown today.

This game I believed was going to have the best fantasy scoring environment and be the highest scoring game on the slate, it delivered on both counts, with 8 regulation goals it beat the CHI/NJD game by 1. This game also had 4 of the top 5 fantasy point producers on the Jock MKT and 6 of the top 10. This was precisely the game to target for fantasy purposes tonight.

Minnesota Wild @ Anaheim Ducks

Players Highlighted:

Jordan Greenway ($4,400 DK, $3,900 FD)
Greenway was a disappointment in the sense that he only managed to pick up 2 of the Wild’s 43 shots on goal tonight, he added a blocked shot to round out his contributions to the scoresheet. His low price tag makes these results tolerable but certainly not a win and considering how many shots his team put on net and the 5 power play opportunities he underwhelmed.

Ryan Hartman ($5,000 DK, $3,700 FD)
Hartman didn’t register a point but with 2 blocked shots and 3 shots on goal he was solid and only a couple plays away from hitting both bonuses. I expect the volume to continue to be there for Hartman and better days ahead but this was an average showing for the former first round pick.

Trevor Zegras ($4,800 DK, $5,200 FD)
Zegras put up zeros across the board and contributed nothing to a mostly abysmal performance by the Ducks offense.

Again using this game to target value plays on an underrated offense, getting an average game from Hartman and a slightly disappointing game from Greenway isn’t a terrible showing. I recommended fading the entire Ducks offense and that was pretty much correct, they recorded 1 goal on 29 shots but Zegras was my one begrudging recommendation and he was an obvious miss tonight.
