Here in the breakdown we’re going to identify the games with the best fantasy scoring environments for everyday of the NHL season. To do this we’re going to look at teams’ scoring chances for (SCF), scoring chances against (SCA), high danger chances for (HDF), high danger chances against (HDA), power play opportunities (PPO) and power play opportunities against (PPOA). The reason for applying those stats to this particular exercise is because they are the best indicator of a team’s scoring opportunities and we want to identify games with teams that possess the best combination of quality and quantity of scoring opportunities. I’ll also offer some of my favorite individual plays from each game using average time on ice (ATOI), average power play time on ice (PPTOI) and team role. We’ll be looking for players on one of the top two scoring lines and players on one of a team’s power play units.
Tonight’s slate only features four games, three if you’re playing the jock mkt tonight, making lineup choices difficult as the same players are going to find their way into a lot of lineups.
San Jose Sharks @ Toronto Maple Leafs
Totals: Highest 6.5 DK 6 FD 6.5
The undefeated San Jose Sharks continue their trip through Eastern Canada when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. The Sharks will be playing their third game in four nights and second of a back to back, making fatigue a factor. San Jose is averaging 5 goals, 51.6 total shots on goal and 6.6 power plays per game. Playing a very controlled game the Sharks rankings leave a bit to be desired coming in at 32nd in SCF (46), 28th in SCA (57), 24th in HDF (19) and 23rd in HDA (23). Toronto well rested, having not played since Monday, should have a slight advantage over the Sharks tonight. The Maple Leafs are averaging 3.75 goals, 65 total shots on goal and 6.75 power plays per game. Despite the lower goal totals in their games Toronto’s rankings in scoring chance categories tell a story of a team due for an offensive explosion ranking 1st in SCF (110), 10th in SCA (88), 2nd in HDF (30) and 15th in HDA (23). This is a game that has the potential to shootout with both teams providing multiple fantasy assets tonight, however I can also see this game turning one sided with the Leafs making a statement win and blowing out the Sharks as they get road weary on their season opening road trip. Therefore I’m going to lean slightly heavier on the Toronto side of this game when it comes to my DFS decisions tonight.
Edmonton Oilers @ Vegas Golden Knights
Totals: Highest 6.5 DK 6.5 FD 6.5
Edmonton is coming off a 5-1 victory over the Coyotes last night, there could be fatigue concerns as this is game three in four nights for the Oilers. Coming into this game they’ve scored 5 or more goals in three of their four games this year. Edmonton’s games average 7.25 goals, a tasty 71 total shots on goal and 7 power play opportunities per game. Edmonton’s scoring chance rankings don’t necessarily back up their per game stats, coming in at 17th in SCF (80), 13th in SCA (85), 14th in HDF (24) and 19th in HDA (22). The Golden Knights host the Oilers undermanned with both Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty expected to be out tonight. Currently Vegas games average 6.3 goals, a superb 71.3 total shots on goal and a disappointing 4.6 power plays per game. The Golden Knights rankings in scoring chance categories show a team that let’s their opponents have ample scoring opportunities, 20th in SCF (77), 11th in SCA (86), 10th in HDF (25) and 1st in HDA (34). Despite being down two of their best forwards Vegas has plenty of fire power to hold serve with Edmonton, especially considering that the Oilers play a style of play that is conducive to counter attacks. This game has the best chance to be the highest scoring game on the slate and offering plenty of high ceiling fantasy options.
