NHL DFS Breakdown 10/27/21

Here in the breakdown we’re going to identify the games with the best fantasy scoring environments for everyday of the NHL season. To do this we’re going to look at teams’ scoring chances for (SCF), scoring chances against (SCA), high danger chances for (HDF), high danger chances against (HDA), power play opportunities (PPO) and power play opportunities against (PPOA). The reason for applying those stats to this particular exercise is because they are the best indicator of a team’s scoring opportunities and we want to identify games with teams that possess the best combination of quality and quantity of scoring opportunities. I’ll also offer some of my favorite individual plays from each game using average time on ice (ATOI), average power play time on ice (PPTOI) and team role. We’ll be looking for players on one of the top two scoring lines and players on one of a team’s power play units.

A smaller slate tonight, only five games to choose from but there’s a couple that set themselves apart.

Philadelphia Flyers @ Edmonton Oilers

Totals: Highest 7 DK 6.5 FD 7

The Philadelphia Flyers (2-1-1) start their trip through Western Canada by taking on the undefeated Edmonton Oilers (5-0-0). All four of the Flyers games have featured 6 or more goals and two of them reached 9. Philadelphia’s games are averaging 7.5 goals, 62.5 total shots on goal and 6.7 power plays. The Flyers have only played four games and it reflects in their overall scoring chance rankings coming in 32nd in SCF (82), 31st in SCA (91), 31st in HDF (24) and 21st in HDA (33) but their per game averages hold up nicely 20.5 – SCF, 22.7 – SCA, 6 – HDF and 8.25 – HDA those numbers are top three in their respective categories for teams playing tonight, showing that Philadelphia will contribute to a fantasy friendly game environment tonight. The Oilers have scored at least 5 goals and the total goals have all been 6 or higher in each of their last three games. Edmonton is averaging 7.2 goals, 71.2 total shots on goal and 6.8 power plays per game on the season. The Oilers rank 28th in SCF (95), 24th SCA (110), 25th in HDF (32) and 27th in HDA (30) having only played in five games those appear low but like their opponent, their averages tell a different story 19 – SCF, 22 – SCA, 6.4 – HDF, 6 – HDA those number compare similarly to the Flyers, especially the SCA numbers showing that both teams have a tendency to give up plenty of opportunities to their opponents.

Detroit Red Wings @ Washington Capitals

Totals: Highest 6.5 DK 6.5 FD 6.5

The Washington Capitals (4-0-2) host the Detroit Red Wings (3-2-1) in a game that may end up in a blowout in favor of the home team but if the Red Wings can elevate their offense just a bit this could be a great back and forth contest with plenty of fantasy points to go around. The Caps last game featured 12 goals and each of their last three games has had at least 5 goals. Washington’s averages on the year are 7 goals, 58 total shots on goal and 6.3 power play opportunities per game and their rankings show a team that generates plenty of offense ranking 6th in SCF (146), 19th in SCA (123), 8th in HDF (42) and 19th in HDA (34) those average out to 24.3 – SCF, 20.5 – SCA, 7 – HDF, 5.6 – HDA. The Red Wings just scored 6 goals in a game that featured 9 total goals and two of their last three games have had 7 or more goals. For the year Detroit’s games are averaging 6.8 goals, 64.8 total shots on goal and 8.1 power plays. The Red Wings rankings show a team that’s going to give up plenty of chances to their opponents checking in at 24th in SCF (113), 7th in SCA (139), 19th in HDF (36) and 11th in HDA (41) bringing their per game averages out to 18.8 – SCF, 23.1 – SCA, 6 – HDF and 6.8 – HDA. The numbers favor the Caps in this game and their side is more likely to find success but the Red Wings will be able to generate some of their own chances and could potentially push the Caps into a shootout.
