Here in the breakdown we’re going to identify the games with the best fantasy scoring environments for everyday of the NHL season. To do this we’re going to look at teams’ scoring chances for (SCF), scoring chances against (SCA), high danger chances for (HDF), high danger chances against (HDA), power play opportunities (PPO) and power play opportunities against (PPOA). The reason for applying those stats to this particular exercise is because they are the best indicator of a team’s scoring opportunities and we want to identify games with teams that possess the best combination of quality and quantity of scoring opportunities.
Florida Panthers @ Detroit Red Wings
Totals: Highest 6 DK 6 FD 6
The undefeated Florida Panthers (7-0-0) head to the Motor City to take on the Detroit Red Wings (4-2-1). Each of the Panthers’ games have featured 5 or more goals and Florida has 4 or more goals in every game this year. Averaging 6.2 goals, 65.2 total shots on goal and 7.8 power plays per game, Panthers’ games have been a fantasy manager’s feasting ground, and they themselves are averaging 4.4 goals scored a game proving their offense to be matchup proof. Their scoring chance rankings back up their game stats ranking 3rd in SCF (172), 19th in SCA (135), 12th in HDF (45), 4th in HDA (51). The most frustrating thing about the Panthers’ offense is figuring out which of their stud forwards is going to put up the points on any given night. Detroit hosts the Panthers having each of their last three games feature 5 or more goals and having given up 6 goals apiece in two of those three games. On the year Red Wings’ games average 6.5 goals, 63.1 total shots and 8 power plays. Detroit struggles to generate consist offensive pressure of their own but they do give their opponents plenty of chances, ranking 25th in SCF (126), 6th in SCA (157), 19th in HDF (41) and 6th in HDA (50). Most of the fantasy points will probably come from the Florida side of this game but the Panthers do rank in the top 5 in HDA so there will be some chances for the Red Wings.
Anaheim Ducks @ Vegas Golden Knights
Totals: Highest 5.5 DK 5.5 FD 5.5
The Vegas Golden Knights (3-4-0) host the Anaheim Ducks (2-4-2) in a battle of Pacific Division cellar dwellers. Three of the Knights last four games have featured 4 or more goals, including an 8 goal game with the Oilers. This season Vegas’ games average 5.4 goals, 66.4 total shots on goal and 4.4 power plays, even with the lack of power plays that average shot total allows the Knights’ games to always have the potential to go off. Their low shooting percentage (6.2% 25th) contributes to an underwhelming goal total but their scoring chance rankings show a team that applies plenty offensive pressure and gives up plenty of opportunities to their opponents. Ranking 4th in SCF (164), 2nd in SCA (185), 1st in HDF (56) and 1st in HDA (73) Knights’ games should start having plenty more goals on the scoreboard soon. The Ducks head to Vegas after three consecutive games had goal totals of 7 and having given up 4 or more goals in five straight games. So far this year Anaheim’s games average 6.3 goals, 65.3 total shots on goal and 6.2 power plays. The Ducks scoring chance rankings show a team that can push Vegas and possibly bring out the best of their offensive game, checking in at 11th in SCF (153), 1st in SCA (191), 3rd in HDF (53) and 2nd in HDA (55). This is an underrated game tonight based off of the 5.5 total line and will have plenty of value to be found in game stacks.
