NHL DFS Environmental Study 11/16/21

Here in the environmental study we’re going to identify the games with the best fantasy scoring environments for everyday of the NHL season. To do this we’re going to look at teams’ scoring chances for (SCF), scoring chances against (SCA), high danger chances for (HDF), high danger chances against (HDA), power play opportunities (PPO) and power play opportunities against (PPOA). The reason for applying those stats to this particular exercise is because they are the best indicator of a team’s scoring opportunities and we want to identify games with teams that possess the best combination of quality and quantity of scoring opportunities.

Montreal Canadiens @ New York Rangers

The Montreal Canadiens (4-11-2) finish up a three game road trip tonight against the New York Rangers (9-3-3). Montreal has played in games that featured 5 or more goals in their last six games and in eight of their last nine. The Canadiens have fired 516 shots for and seen 520 shots against on the season. That breaks down to 30.35 shots for and 3.41 shots against per game to go along with 3.29 power play opportunities and 3.41 power plays against a game. Montreal is top ten in all scoring chance categories, 3rd in SCF (363, 21.35/game), 9th in SCA (337, 19.82/game), 2nd in HDF (121, 7.11/game) and 4th in HDA (108, 6.35/game). The Rangers are riding a three game winning streak and their games have seen 7 or more goals in each of their last three and four of their last five. For the year New York has put up 416 shots for, 27.73 per game, and faced 503 shots against, 33.53 per game, and a matching 3.13 power play opportunities and power plays against. The Rangers scoring chance numbers depict a team that allows their opponents plenty of offensive chances, ranking 25th in SCF (270, 18/game), 3rd in SCA (365, 24.33/game), 28th in HDF (77, 5.13/game) and 3rd in HDA (110, 8.33/game). Montreal hasn’t manage to put up many wins this year but they match up well with the Rangers, if they can get more efficient shooting (5.7% 30th) then can score some goals and push New York into a high scoring affair.

Carolina Hurricanes @ Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights (9-6-0) are winners of three in a row and five of their last six as they host the Carolina Hurricanes (11-2-0). None of the Knights’ last six games have had less than 5 combined goals and three of them saw 7 or more goals. Vegas is averaging over thirty shots for (32.73) and shots against (34) on the season for totals of 491 shots for and 510 shots against. Both the Knights’ power play opportunities (2.26/game) and power plays against (2.86/game) are below average for the year. Vegas ranks top three in three out of four categories, checking in at 7th in SCF (336, 22.4/game), 2nd in SCA (388, 25.86/game), 2nd in HDF (121, 8.06/game) and 1st in HDA (140, 9.33/game). Tonight’s game kicks off a six game road trip for the Hurricanes and they’ve seen 5 or more goals in three of their last five games. Carolina has put 432 shots on net and faced 368 shots against, they’ve also had 51 power play opportunities and 59 power plays against, those per game averages are 33.23 shots for, 28.3 shots against, 3.92 PPO and 4.53 PPOA. The Canes rank 26th in SCF (266, 20.46/game), 31st in SCA (238, 18.30/game) 20th in HDF (86, 6.61/game) and 24th in HDA (80, 6.15/game). While their scoring chance numbers are underwhelming Carolina’s hyper efficient shooting percentage (8.5% 3rd) paired with Vegas’ tissue paper defense suggest the Canes will get opportunities and will capitalize on them.
