An Eduoard Newsy Lalonde C55 1910-11 Imperial Tobacco hockey card, graded 3 out of 10, has sold for $100K tying the record for the most paid for a hockey card. In April 2007 the record was set by a C56 1911-12 Georges Vezina rookie card graded in mint condition.

The Vezina rookie card was in mint condition and the Lalonde was only graded a 3 (very good condition) they both sold for $100K. One of the main reasons could have to do with the rareness of the vintage Lalonde card. Beckett Hockey Collector magazine has reported that to date only 2 copies of this card have surfaced publically.
As experts in the field of vintage hockey cards, like BMW Sports Cards and Beckett, dig up more information on the history of hockey cards, it is becoming more apparent that the 1910-11 C56 Imperial Tobacco hockey cards are the first set ever made.
Eduoard Charles Lalonde was the most famous athlete in Canada during his era playing exceptionally well at both lacrosse and hockey. He earned his nickname of Newsy during his youth when he worked in a newsprint plant in Cornwall Ontario. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950. During the same year he was named Canada’s outstanding lacrosse player of the half century. The Hockey Hall of fame called him the dominant player of hockey’s first quarter century.
From 1910-1954 Lalonde held the record for most goals scored by professional hockey player. 124 of his 441 goals were scored in the NHL which did not exist when he first started playing hockey as a pro. It was Maurice The Rocket Richard who surpassed his record in 1954, with 443 goals.
