Just teasing...
He isn't known for his playmaking, but he had some great assists last night. That Shanny goal was purty.
He's also great on the PK, and he backchecks very well. He's the defensive positive of Ortmeyer, but he can actually stick handle.
He's had some bad luck offensively. He was robbed twice by Brodeur, and I think he was also open-net robbed against Kolzig and he's hit the post twice.. that's gotta be frustrating!
So far, he has 8 points, which puts him on pace for about 80 points since we just passed game 11.
Gomez has not been worth it so far. He's mishandled the puck on a few occasions, and he has trouble getting the puck out in the attack zone.. but I'm not worried.
Gomez has been playing very well on the PP unit, which includes Drury, Jagr, Shanny and Roszival.
When we're in a 5 on 5 situation, he really shows his speed, and honestly, I think Hossa and Jagr can't keep up with him.
He has definitely been improving lately, showing more patience such as Nylander did last year with Jagr.. but again, I'm not worried.
Once Straka is back, he'll most likely be paired with Gomez and Jagr. Straka can probably account for as many assists to Jagr as Nylander last year (just look at their respective stats).
Our defense is playing better than they were post-January 06/07, and what else can we ask for? Lundqvist has been amazing and is in top-form already.
We've had a few stinkers, but last night, things really clicked.
Jagr with a goal and an assist, and lost 2 teeth. Shanny with a goal. Drury with 2 assists. Henrik with another brilliant performance, minus the stupid penalty shot, which would not have been one in the old aka better NHL.
Holmqvist made some great saves last night, otherwise the score would have been easily 6-1.. and that doesn't include the posts hit by Gomez, Jagr, and I think Staal had one as well.
Tampa has one of the top scoring lines in the league, and they were shut down yesterday.
Just be patient, Ranger fans. We have Nylander and Ovechkin to outplay on Thursday.
Drury has 8 pts in 11 games. That means he is tracking to about 60 points for the season, not 80. And 60 is about right for him.Gomez has 2 goals in 11 games. That means he is tracking to about 15 goals for the season. Again, that is about right for him. They are both giving the Rangers what one should expect. Perhaps they will be better than current, but I wouldn't bet the mortgage. They are both playing to form.
How can you say a guy who has scored 30 goals or more in the past two seasons and has only managed 1 so far this year is on his regular pace? Drury in snake bitten right now but he has always been a goal scorer. Gomez is also not playing to his full potential. He has never been a goal scorer so your right, he is heading at his regular pace in that department. But he has always been a very good play maker who racks up assists but so far he only has one. I would be willing to bet that each turns their game around, but so far their play hasn't reflected their past so you cant make your sarcastic "this is what the Rangers should have expected" comments.
Is Jagr still crying for his boyfriend Nylander?
Ty?? I did not refer to Gomez assist totals or his full potential, only his goals. Gomez scored over 30 once in his career (not twice the past two seasons). In his 7 years prior to this season, he scored 19, 14, 10, 13, 14, 33, 13 goals. That is an average of about 17 goals per season. 15 goals, give or take, is about right for him. I did not refer to Drury goal scoring, only his total points total. In his 8 year career, he scored 44, 67, 65, 46, 53, 53, 67, 69 points. That is an average of about 58 points. 60 points, give or take, is about right for him. For the record, he scored 20, 20, 24, 21, 23, 18, 30, 37 goals for a season average of about 24 goals per season. Personally, that wouldn't classify him as a "goal scorer" although his last two seasons of at least 30 is impressive.I stand by my comments. Perhaps both will provide more, but statistically Gomez is tracking to his goal total and Drury to his points total.
I've been watching some Rangers games to catch Drury in action, and he's playing pretty well despite some of the chemistry mishaps. He is certainly a playmaker with strong defensive skills and great powerplay awareness. Sad to see him go, but happy that he is just starting to click with his new linemates.
i was referring to Drury as the player who scored 30 the past two seasons. My point was that you were judging both players slightly out of context. You were saying that Gomez was playing up to standard because he was on pace for his normal goal totals. However, he is not a goal scorer, he is a play maker who was in brought in to put up assists. You cant judge him on goals alone. So far he has only one assist, a far cry from years past. And although I agree with "tubby" that Drury still manages to do all the little things right he is still struggling to score goals, something he was brought in to do. So far neither has met their expectations (play making for Gomez, scoring for Drury), although Drury has been solid in other areas.
Heh, I gotta stop doing math in my head. Drury and Gomez will improve their numbers significantly, assuming Renney sticks with the lines this time! We did not just sign these guys for the regular season. Their playoff stats are quite impressive.
Ty...maybe you should take note that Drury the last two season was on a different team. But this is where Drury performs and is on status que. He will not be scoring more then 30 goals this year. that is not his job. playmakers are not goal scores, they are set up men.
play makers do not put up similar numbers, or last year in drury's case a higher number of goals than they do assists. A guy who has has 67 goals the past two years and only put up 69 assists during that same span is definitely a goal scorer more so than a play maker. But you are right Drury wont be scoring more than 30 goals this year at the pace he is going. Right now he is on pace for 7goals (as per TSN.ca)...the lowest he has ever scored was 18 and hes usually averages around 22-25. I would like to see your argument for a play maker who puts up higher or similar numbers in goals vs. assists. I respect your opinion and am just curious to see your side.
Ty, my original post corrected a minor point in PwozNYR otherwise good blog. I wasn't judging either player (in or out of context) other than saying that they are playing to their statistical form for total points (Drury) or goals (Gomez). Ranger fans can expect for a positive outlying year, but that is based more on hope (Gomez will score more once he's out of the NJ system), not past performance. I did not judge or discuss their overall play, their faceoff abilities, clutch reputation, etc. For the record, I agree that Drury will start scoring at a higher rate and will probably be around 20-25 at the end of the season. I expect his points total to be around 60-65. I also agree that Gomez will start assisting more, once he develops better chemistry with Jagr. I still expect him to finish around 15-18 goals/40-45 assists. I'll leave it to others to judge if 60 points or so is worth a $10 million salary/$7 million cap hit. Incidentally Matt Cullen, who I thought was a great fit for the Rangers and who had to be traded for cap reasons once Gomez came on board, is currently on track for a far superior statistical season than Gomez.
Ok, now Drury is good for 68 points :P
