I think so. He slew-footed Paul Mara as he was going toward the empty net.

Watch the video and decide for yourself:

Let's bust out the NHL rule book:

http://www.nhl.com/rules/rule91.html for reference:

d.) Any player who is guilty of "slew-footing" shall be assessed a match penalty. This penalty shall be in accordance with Rule 43 -- Attempt to or Deliberate Injury of Opponents. Any player assessed a match penalty for "slew-footing" will also be subject to Rule 33A -- Supplementary Discipline.

Rule 43-a: xiii: slew-footing
A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts or who deliberately injures an opponent and the circumstances shall be reported to the Commissioner for further action. A substitute for the penalized player shall be permitted at the end of the fifth minute.

Rule 33A - Supplementary Discipline

In addition to the automatic fines and suspensions imposed under these Rules, the Commissioner may, at his discretion, investigate any incident that occurs in connection with any Pre-season, Exhibition, League or Playoff game and may assess additional fines and/or suspensions for any offense committed during the course of a game or any aftermath thereof by a player, Trainer, Manager, Coach or club executive, whether or not such offense has been penalized by the Referee.

(NOTE) If an investigation is requested by a Club or by the League on its own initiative, it must be initiated within twenty-four (24) hours following the completion of the game in which the incident occurred.

So what do you think?

I'm gonna write a little something about this clown too! All my respect for this guy flew out the window last night, I hope the Rangers smell blood.

We're getting under their skin without the Avery factor, which is good. It turns out Mara was slewfooted twice by Malkin. Crosby went in Girardi's face after a perfectly clean hit on Hossa.

I really don't know if he will be suspended but it's something to be looked into. The same good be said about Kovalev because he intentionally kicked his leg out to hit Umbergers knee. Now, I know everyone is going to cry wolf and say there was no intent. But, if you watch replay after replay about this two incidents it really makes you wonder. It's worse enough those two players don't drop the gloves and their star players. There actions are worthy to at least a fine.

Oh...Campbell doesn't have the balls to suspend someone.
May 2, 2008 9:59 AM ET | Delete
hahaha...yeah right like campbell would suspend malkin...he wouldn't even suspend that good laraque...should he be...YES...there's no room for plays like that...will he be..NO....preferential treatment for the pens as usual...GO RANGERS!!!
May 2, 2008 10:05 AM ET | Delete
He SHOULD be suspended...he will not be, but he should be.
May 2, 2008 10:14 AM ET | Delete
It likely won't even be reviewed.
May 2, 2008 10:24 AM ET | Delete
Yes he should be suspended. I wouldn't count on it though. He wasn't even penalized for it, was he? Not that that should make a difference.

Malkin and Sid the SKID...mark would never get tossed god forbid RBK misses an add promo on "VS the Penguins"
May 2, 2008 10:29 AM ET | Delete
Holy sh!t!!! Ranger and Flyer fans agreeing.... Sorry had to point that out. Too funny...today is Friday right...TGIF
May 2, 2008 10:42 AM ET | Delete
Yeah, no place for slew footing. I agree with Js, should be suspended, but wont be. Come on you're talking about Malkin here. Had that been Mara on Malkin, instant suspension. We all know that there is a double standard when it comes to suspensions, it's the Chris Pronger Rule set.

Totally agree he should be suspended but nothing will come of it! Double standards like this are why so many people get frustrated with this league and stop watching!
May 2, 2008 10:49 AM ET | Delete
you're right wayneZ...can you imagine if the rangers had done it...OR THE FLYERS!!! We wouldn't hear an end to what a cheap shot it was...but no...not for Malkin...it'll be forgotten by tonight...the pens may win but it doens't mean they actually earned it...
May 2, 2008 10:51 AM ET | Delete
btw...in the secodn to last regular season game when we played them...gonchar butt ended hartnell IN THE FACE w/ his stick...it wasn't even called a penalty even though hartnell was bleeding profusely...what other team could get away with that?
May 2, 2008 10:55 AM ET | Delete
one more thing...what the hell was that penalty shot last night? seriously...i didn't see anything that indicated a penalty shot...i saw a check from behind that knocked malkin off the puck. no trip...i mean he didn't even have a stick...it was a good play...not a penalty shot...
May 2, 2008 10:58 AM ET | Delete
that was one of the worst calls for a penalty shot I have ever seen, just par for the course.....everything that the officials seem to see is for Pittsburgh's benefit.
May 2, 2008 11:16 AM ET | Delete
Suspended? No chance. Should he have gotten a nice juicy penalty for it? Well duh.
May 2, 2008 11:28 AM ET | Delete
Just imagine if Hollweg or, God forbid, Avery slew-footed someone. Bettman is itching for that to happen.. but no... not wonderboy's teammate!
May 2, 2008 11:40 AM ET | Delete
Suspension for a slew foot? Go watch some ballet
May 2, 2008 12:30 PM ET | Delete
According to the rules, yeah, he should be suspended for game 5. The problem with that though is that he's not on the right team. If Malkin was a Flyer or a Duck, he'd be gone.
May 2, 2008 12:35 PM ET | Delete
Yeah Howie9416, that was a bad call. But c'mon, that was the worst freakin' penalty shot by a skill player EVER. I reminded me of old Ducks Dman Bobby Dollas who had a penalty shot once. He just slowly skated toward the goalie and flipped at his logo and turned and skated back to the bench. You could tell he didn't know what the hell to do and his ineptitude was hilarious!

CRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEPER!
May 2, 2008 12:52 PM ET | Delete
Had to watch the YouTube clip cause that game actually put me to sleep. Malkin should be suspended according to the rules. They put that rule in there for a reason. I agree with the double standard, and it really sucks. And he did it twice. As for the penalty shot, should you be allowed to reach out with no stick and grab/shove a guy on a breakaway? I agree it was fairly weak, but it did disrupt his scoring chance as he obviously pushed him hard enough to throw him off balance. I also thought it was a goal, I wonder if the ruling was no goal because Malkin slid into Lundqvist, even if his own guy cause it.
May 2, 2008 1:31 PM ET | Delete
i think the ruling was just that they couldn't get a clear view of the puck crossing...i think it was under malkin's leg...but yeah he also did push Lundqvist in technically..
May 2, 2008 9:06 PM ET | Delete
That was a busch league move by Malkin, if there wasn't a instigator penalty that would have been dealt with on the spot.
