Different game, same story for the St. Louis Blues in their 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.
For the second time in as many games, the Blues had a goal disallowed at a critical juncture of the game, and this time, the marker would have been the game winner. Both times, the play was blown dead, even though the puck was in the goal and the goaltender didn't have possession. These plays are "unrevieweable," so of course, even if the referee knows he made a mistake, there's nothing he can do, which really doesn't make much sense.
Even though the Blues had the benefit of two late powerplays with some five on three time, this is still completely insane. Yes, the Blues should have converted on those opportunities, and I'm not making excuses. But the fact is, after regulation play, the Blues should have won 3-2.
I don't normally whine about the officiating. Mick McGeough has taught me that I should be happy when the refs are merely mediocre. But this was a critical two points for both teams, and the officials blew it. I can't stand it when a blatantly bad call taints the outcome of a game. Sure, there are a ton of non-existent penalties, but when the entire course of a game turns on a bad penalty or a misruling on a goal, it really grinds my gears.
Now instead of gaining two points on a rival playoff contender, the Blues are another point down.
The Blues played one of the best games I've seen them play in a while. Legace was back in form, and our futile powerplay, despite its failings in the third period, managed to convert for a goal. This Blues loss was not for lack of effort.
Luongo played an unbelieveable third period to keep the Canucks in the game, most notably with his crazy save on Brad Boyes with less than ten minutes in the third period.
But still, the blown call leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Obviously you don't watch to many oiler games. Id be surprised if i didn't see a penalty handed out in the third period when they are up a goal. Only to have a goal scored and have to go into over time. If MCGoof is reffing then he will try and make some ridiculous call to look good which will cost a team the game. Happens everytime. If they can overturn a goal for highsticks and other things then they should be able to CHALLENGE the refs call. This would put more onus on a refs call and maybe make them officiate a liitle better.
That was a frustrating game to watch. Good start to the game, Manny was sharp which was good to see. Another terrific goal by Boyes. Two peculiar PP goals by Ohlund. On top of all their other troubles the Blues PK is sliding downward in the league standings. The official clearly blew the call on the late third period goal, no question. They only showed the replay once but it sure sounded like the whistle didn't blow until the puck was obviously in the net. Had the officials wanted to get that one right they could have determined that with replay IMO. I hate how the Blues were plowed under in the OT - never got a sniff at the net and spent most of the time running around their own end. And of course they are an absolute embarrassment in the shootout. 1 shoot out goal for the entire season and counting.
I was only able to watch the first period and I saw them make a call against the Canucks that was mistifying. Apparently, at that particular time and place, it was against the rules to touch a Blues player. IMO, I thought the Blues came out flat. A nice (lucky) goal by King got me interested but was soon dozing off after they tied the game. Was I dreaming or did I actually see Backman getting a little physical in the corner in the first?
They should put a challenge rule into the NHL. Just like the NFL, you'll have 1 timeout, and if the play on the ice stands you lose your timeout. They will need more HD cameras though.
Yes I do think that they should change the whistle blowing rule. It seems weird to me, however, regardless of the whistle 2 playes slide into Luongo so the goal wouldn't have counted anyway.
