Am I the only one concerned?

As if it wasn't a big enough concern that the team I have all but worshiped for my whole life has missed the playoffs for 3 consecutive years, now I find myself worrying about the whole management situation that is an on-going mess in Toronto.

It is very troublesome that with an exceptionally crucial draft approaching, current interim GM Fletcher is apparently focussed with Richard Peddie and Gord Kirke on filling the long-term GM role. I for one, am firmly entrenched in the thought that the Maple Leafs can easily do what the Philadelphia Flyers did last year and go from worst to contender in one season. Granted, the Leafs weren't 'worst', but I do not think it is out of the realm of possibility that Toronto could turn the ship around and be a contender next year.

Simple tasks of removing the pretenders from the team would be a large step in the right direction. Players like Ponikarovsky, Blake, Stajan, Kubina, McCabe and Raycroft need to be dealt with, either through trade, demotion or buyout.

With all the focus being centered around replacing Fletcher, I for one would like to know how much focus is being placed on fixing the team. I understand that it is supposedly being left up to the new GM, but what if there isn't one in place by the draft, and if there isn't one by then, is there going to be one by the day free agency opens?

This is an extremely important time of year, and I for one am very concerned with what MLSE seems to be doing so far this off-season.

I guess I can only hope we have our reliable scouting staff on top of things. (If you detected a little sarcasm there you aren't crazy!)

It remains to be seen I suppose as to whether or not they have what it takes in place right now to do the right things this off-season, or if it all comes down to getting someone in place prior to the draft and start of free agency.
