Ok, so we have been talking a lot in general on this site about a guy named Sundin. So lets assume the Avs have the ability to be involved in a trade that is necessary for the "lucky" team to clear the cap space necessary to sign. Lets look at several teams that have been rumored on this site to be in the Sundin sweeps, and then see how the Avs could benefit via trade, and still not give up much in assets. If any of you can think of any trades that make sense for the Avs involving teams rumored to be in on Sundin, add your thoughts. Add why you think the listed trades will or won't work.
1. Sundin to New York Rangers. NYR trade Scott Gomez to the Colorado Avalanche for Brett Clark, Tyler Arnason, and a second Round pick.
Pros: Great center, new depth to replace the loss of Sakic. Working with Wolski or Svatos all involved would see their point totals go up. If Sakic does not return this is a long term solution down the middle. This tandem down the center of Stastny and Gomez down the middle could easily be the best set up centers in the league. Scary passing good.
Cons: Huge Salary for a long term. Limit some players in the system on extensions. Would make more that the future of the organization, Paul Stastny. Would lose a top 3 shot blocker on the back end as well as one of the blue liners on the Avs that can move puck through the neutral zone. Also give up some of the leadership in the locker room.
2.???? You answer. Pick a team and a trade. Do your best to make sure the team will stay under the cap to best of your knowledge of the cap. List who would go where as well as the pros and cons. Who knows, one of us might get it right.

gimme some time and I'll come up with a few trade ideas for you...in the meantime, I really think it would take more than Clark, Arny and a 2nd for Gomez...prob be more like Svatos, Clark and a 1st or perhaps a good prospect rather than one of those players. keep the ideas flowing man, you're doing great!

I think the Arnason, Clark and 2nd rd pick would work considering they want Sundin THAT bad. If the Rangers do this trade its a steal for the Av's.
If Washington really is a plyaer for Sundin as Eklund mentioned earlier, I would make a trade there. I would send Brett Clark and a second for Brooks Laich.
I am trying to figure out the numbers for Stall from the Pens. He is an RFA next year, so his numbers are low, so essentially the Avs would have to take him as well as some dead salary without shedding anything. Essentially that means a first or second round pick to make it work.Lets also be realistic that teams from the west are going to be less likely to make a trade with the Avs. The playoff bubble this year is huge, as it has been since the lockout. Any major deal involving the Avs will involve the East, to almost some degree of certainty. Especially since Sundin is known to favor the travel in the East.Something else that is an x-factor is that Giguere really has not left his thumbprint on this team in the shape of a trade. Since his takeover we haven't seen anything that would resemble a major trade or move that would vastly change the terrain of the Avs. Every GM wants to be smart, but they also want to leave their mark.
I would not want Scott Gomez for his salary. He's only topped 20 goals ONCE in his entire career. He's a good player, but WAY overpaid.Go figure, Rangers...
what about Malkin? This might sound crazy to some people but let's think. Pens need help on the wings and on D (esp. w/Gill gone). I will be posting a blog shortly about this, including Pros and Cons.
Jonathan Cheechoo could be the ticket. He would be a trade for assets though. Marleau won't happen, he has a no trade clause, and is a huge part of that team. Cheechoo would fit under the cap even if Sakic returns. Marleau would require another move to make it work. Cheechoo would be more likely, and his salary would be more than enough for Sundin. My question to the sharks would be why mess with a good thing?
