Radulov gets one game

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
Nashville Predators' forward Alexander Radulov recieved a one game suspension by the NHL today following a vicious hit from behind on San Jose's Steve Bernier in last nights game. The real question here is whether or not Radulov deserved more time for the incident.

Bernier - Burned the Ducks

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
Bernier did a wonderful job at keeping the puck out of his net. With Todd Bertuzzi continuously screening the young rookie kept his cool and was all smiles through the entire game. What's scary about him is that he's so relaxed and this was his first NHL game. A prime example of this relaxed rookie is when he batted the puck down and just covered it up without being te...

A long way to go

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Note to Sabres fans: There is too much time left. A rash of negative phone calls hit the WGR-550 AM airwaves yesterday in Buffalo as fans voiced their disapproval with how contract negotiations with D Brian Campbell were botched, forcing a trade. It appeared that many fans were pointing the finger directly at GM Darcy Regier. This wasn't Regier's fault. This time yo...
So for those of you who get lost sometimes in trades, I've tried to compile a good list of what Buffalo has given up and then gotten through trades in 2008: Trade Deadline Day 2008: Sabres give up: [20 Games of service from Brian Campbell] 7th round pick in 2008 Entry Draft [later became Drew Daniels (RW)] Sabres get: Steve Bernier (...
Bernier was offered a 2.5m 1yr offer sheet by St. Louis, just mere days after Vancouver acquired him for a 2nd round pick in 2010 and 3rd round pick in 2009. Since the offer sheet was in the 2.0mil to 3.0mil range, Buffalo (should St. Louis have filed the offer sheet) would have been entitled to St Louis' 1st and 3rd round picks in 2009. Kinda stinky to see what coul...

Canuck Gold

First I would like to commend the Canuck organization for the impressive and sincere tribute to the late Luc Bourdon. For those who didn't have the opportunity to see the heart-warming display it began with two massive portraits of Luc on the ice surface. Tom Cochraine and Red Rider performed "Big L...

Sundin returns

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
He's back in the NHL and playing for the Canucks. He certainly gave Ek a lot of material to work with in terms of being the focus (somewhat) of the hockey universe for the last long while. I really had been hoping for a larger build up to his return and really didn't get much. Living in the Vancouver area, I was kinda hoping for a little buzz about the guy but didn't g...

Kings at Big

Jonathan Bernier getting the Start for the Kings against the Stars... Justin Williams back after 11 weeks from a broken leg...wow.
Jonathan Bernier was supposed to be the goalie of the future for the Los Angeles Kings, but apparently Jonathan Quick didn’t get the memo. Quick has proven that he is an above average NHL starting goaltender, and because of that Bernier will probably not get his shot at earning the Kings starting job unless Quick gets injured. So what does a team do with two goalie...
Theres a lot being made of the Avs trading two high draft choices for Varlamov, who till this date has yet to secure the starting goaltender role from JS Giguere. Varlamov, a 23 year old former first round draft pick has amassed a total of 90 games over 3 seasons in the NHL, with a record of 44-29-13 GAA of 2.60 and a .910 SV%. Just for a comparison, 23 year old Jonath...
It just might be that time. Will Columbus do the right thing for their franchise as well as their franchise player? This of course would be trading Rick Nash. Speaking as a hockey fan I think that most would agree, Rick Nash deserves better and NHL fans would benefit i...
Matthew Barry has made an excellent point in his blog on Bernier to Toronto for Frattin and a 3rd rounder (http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Matthew-Barry/Frattin-and-a-3rd-for-Bernier/125/45651) Barry's quote - Yeah, Bernier's been moaning like a kid whose parents won't t...
This is pre-Phoenix, but I think the Edmonton game was a sign the Kings are headed back to last season's form/pattern. They've shook the cobwebs I mean the suds of the party/offseason off and are ready to be stingy on D and in net. The forwards can't score, yet, and that is how the Kings got it going last year. Great D and netminding, anemic offense. Clifford is everyth...

Kings Recap: 1/26 @ Phoenix As I write this, the Kings are closing in on their first victory this season as defending champs...could not think of a better place than Phoenix, who are still ticked off at Dustin Brown and the Kings for ousting them in the Conference Finals. Thursday night was just a bad night. The Kings looked awful on the power play, not generating ...
February 10, 2013 Maple Leafs 5, Flyers 2; Kings 4 @ Blues 1 What can I say, the Maple Leafs are on fire right now! And the Kings actually looked like a championship caliber team. First, let's begin with the Kings who needed a good performance after yesterday's killer defeat. Darryl Sutter finally played Jonathan Bernier, who helped give incumben...
February 16, 2013 Maple Leafs 3, Ottawa Senators 0 Did I say Ottawa Senators at the top? I meant to say the Binghamton Senators, as the visitors were playing without several of its key players like Erik Karlsson, Jason Spezza, Peter Regin and Guillaume Latendresse. Well perhaps maybe not so much the last two names listed above, but definitely...
February 21 Maple Leafs 3, Buffalo Sabres 1 I will start tonight with the Maple Leafs victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Air Canada Centre while it's most fresh in my mind... I had expected for the Sabres to come out with a little more emotion after their long time bench boss was relieved of his duties the night before. Although they got the f...
March 4th Kings 5, Nashville Predators 1 First of all, give me some credit for staying up living in central time zone to watch a game between two teams who don't score much but take great pride in tight, defensive-minded hockey with great goaltending. Sure it is boring, but its the way hockey is supposed to be played. But thank God I did s...
March 6th Kings 6, St. Louis Blues 4 Wow! What a game! Watching this one late into the night was even better than popping by DVD copy of "Slapshot" in the player... To be honest, I was not at all surprised that the Kings made this sort of comeback. To me, it was the defending champions toying with the Blues all night. They may have just ska...
March 20 Kings Sweep Away Misfit Coyotes Before I offer my opinion on the LA Kings trade rumors, I should mention a little bit about last night... During the two-game home series against the Phoenix Coyotes, we saw a true championship caliber team man-handle and dictate play against a team that thinks they can compete with them, but in reality...
Friends, fans and upper management we gather here today to look back upon the Flyers career of the only player we know who can actually flick a switch when games matter. Danny Briere came to the Flyers in July of 2007 and gave this organization hope, that even after an abysmal season star players still wished to play in the City of Brotherly Love. We had all hoped for ...
June 21 The first official day of summer brings joy to many. School is finally out. The Stanley Cup playoffs are in full swing. Baseball season is hitting its serious curve. But yikes, another Toronto Maple Leaf offseason is about to get underway. And from the sound of things, I am getting a bad feeling in my gut. With the numerous reports ...
June 21 Now, shifting over to the Los Angeles Kings, who I hope are resting and healing fast for the real upcoming 82-game season starting in October... The pending trade of backup, yet capable #1 goaltender Jonathan Bernier is obviously the most important next step for GM Dean Lombardi. With the Toronto Maple Leafs emerging as front runners as of ri...
June 23 I will admit that whenever the two teams you like or support get together and make a deal, it is always fun and interesting. This is especially true when they both go head-to-head during the season. The bottom line of this trade is that the Los Angeles Kings had a small window in which to find the best deal for their top-notch buried goaltender ...

Trades For Thought

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Just some late night trade possibilities. Canucks trade Roberto Luongo, Jannik Hansen, 1st round pick and 3rd round pick TO the Islanders for Nino Niederreiter, Josh Bailey, Rick Dipietro, 1st rounder and 2nd rounder. Maybe a deal that doesn't or cant take off but I could see it being a good deal? It would suck to see Hansen go but to bring back Niederreiter and Bailey wou...

Maple Leaf Musings

The Leafs have started there off season retooling with the Johnathon Bernier, they still have some big moves and holes to fill. Dave Nonis has to decide what to do with James Reimer now that Bernier is in the fold. There are a few teams that may be looking at adding a goalie. Philadelphia, Phoenix and the Islanders are for sure looking for a goalie. With Reports that Ki...
July 7 First of all, I would like to thank all those who responded to my latest post (especially Roadrunner!) Great to talk hockey with you folks!...Also, cannot pass up the opportunity to have some fun with a Flyers fan, whose organization throws around money like its candy and whines about it later! And oh, how the once mighty and class of the East has falle...
The next Maple Leafs season is fast approaching, with only 42 days until the season opener, and a mere 26 days until the preseason, we keep wondering who will be our number one goaltender and be in goal for us throughout most of the season. Here's why Reimer will be number 1, while Bernier is yet again going to take the backup position. Bernier, with his 1.88 GAA, and 9...
When the Leafs acquired goaltender Jonathan Bernier from the Los Angeles Kings this past summer, two things were made clear by this move. One, the Leafs would have one heck of a goaltending duo this upcoming season—and two, the Leafs will more than likely have a goaltending controversy on their hands at the end of all of this. I've always said its never a bad thing to...

Back For More!

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
October 5 Welcome back Maple Leaf and King followers... With my busy coaching and teaching schedule, it is going to be tough for me to express my thoughts on my beloved clubs after every game, so I will try and fill in at least once a week for a little "unbiased" recap. I use the term unbiased very loosely, obviously. After being noticeably outplayed in the...
A wise man once told me that history is bound to repeat itself. This is the main reason why many Leaf fans have stayed loyal. For us, the loyal Blue and White army, we still believe history has proven we will move back into supremacy. Now I'm not here to begin blowing the horn of victory just yet. But, the masked men in between the pipes have begun to show us the capabilit...
Jonathan Bernier has been nothing short of spectacular for the Maple Leafs this season. Yet, it would seem every couple of games, a goal is scored that would only happen in E division men's league. Are these house league horn sounders a tell-tale sign of things to come or just bad luck. Bernier is one of the most fundamentally sound goaltender in the NHL. For a small g...
December 5th Welcome back to the scene Mr. Bernier and Mr. Kadri. Tonight at the Air Canada Centre, the Maple Leafs got exactly what they were asking for when they traded for Jonathan Bernier. Bernier was a man on a mission tonight, and although he allowed the game-tying goal later in the third on an outstanding hand-eye coordination play by the savvy v...
December 8 Same Old Story, Different Night Once again, the Boston Bruins continue to show why they are the team to beat in the East, and of course the Toronto Maple Leafs know this sentiment all to well. As a matter of fact, just give the Boston Bruins the Atlantic Division crown right now. There is no way the Maple Leafs will keep them from achievi...
December 12 Toronto is a spectacular city. Full of great people, who take great pride in their town...and its teams, even though when they've hit rock bottom. Watching TSN from my Bond Place Hotel room the other night, they broadcasted a bit from the MLB Winter Meetings from Lake Buena Vista Florida, (aka The Swan at the Walt Disney World Resorts where I ran i...
December 27 Same old story for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Get off to a crummy, uninspired start. Fall behind a couple of goals. Wake up in the second period and thrill the crowd, only to let them down again in the final minutes (this time seconds). But wait, thank God for the shootout! This goes back to my argument in my Christmas break blog. These shoot...
December 29 Jonathan Bernier and Tyler Bozak Lead Maple Leafs to Victory Perhaps I was a little too tough on Jonathan Bernier in my last blog. Toronto fans have been looking for a strong, young goaltender to lead the team back as a playoff fixture. I thought James Reimer did that last season, and was poised to do it again this season. Maybe that ...
January 7 After an improbable victory (in a shootout mind you folks!) in the Winter Classic, things continue to get worse for a team who is extremely fragile minded. This is everyone's fault, from the ice, to the bench and to the press box. It has been a while since I have written anything. Been on vacation while on winter break from teaching. I enjoyed the Sm...
January 12 Bernier and Maple Leafs End Skid; Shake Off Poor Officiating At least the losing streak came to an end. Still, I am very glad to see the Maple Leafs earn two points tonight, they played hard enough and deserved to win the game in regulation. Jonathan Bernier hung tough and helped his team snap the string of bad losses especially whe...
March 27 It has been a while. There really has not been much to talk about, except watching the Toronto Maple Leafs revert to a team who plays with little clue of how to play the game of hockey. The team refuses to keep things simple. They have also tuned coach Randy Carlyle out completely. It has also become very evident that the seven year extension for pse...
April 27 Do the Leafs need a new coach or new Philosophy? First of all, I do not think that simply bringing in a new coach and continuing with the same exact roster for the most part will pay instant dividends. First, the team needs to decide what it will do with its goaltending situation. Everyone thinks that Jonathan Bernier was a "savior" for th...
Follow Me On Twitter: https://twitter.com/DailyNHLGrind The Avalanche hosted Hockey Fights Cancer night and skated away with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Pepsi Center. The entertaining, fast-paced game was won after the Avs put a perfect three pucks past Bernier on three opportunities in the shootout. Despite the fantastic pace on...
Another regular season, another Kings team, simply sliding their way through yet another 82 game schedule, hoping for the best and hoping for a chance to play further into spring. I have seen enough of this group to draw the conclusion that they are constant underachievers in the regular season, but perhaps not overachievers when it comes to the second season of the NH...
It has been a while since I have written anything, because we all know what the Maple Leafs season is going to be like and for the West Coast Kings followers, well this season is Stanley Cup Finals or bust. But here we go again with the Leafs in goal. James Reimer gets his goal back, plays out of his mind for two weeks and all of a sudden we got a win streak going for a...
The Leafs cannot just throw this guy on Waivers. Like one person said earlier, just letting him go could lead to a missed opportunity by not getting something at least for him. He still does have potential to be a solid #1 goaltender in the NHL but definitely not on the Maple Leafs or any other Eastern club. Like I said before, and even before the trade with the Kings took...
WARNING: SPOILER ALERT! Kings vs. Leafs and STAR WARS! All in the same night in downtown Toronto...couldn't get any better than that! However, the night did come with several surprises although I am still not sure which one captured the essence of Saturday night in Toronto. Perhaps is was the Maple Leafs playing a near flawless game against a Stanley Cup champ...
Welcome back the real Jonathan Bernier. Tonight, the Maple Leafs take it to the Coyotes in the desert. All pressure on a youngster in goal Louis Domingue, who ultimately stole the show (and the win) for Arizona. The Leafs played perhaps even better than they did Saturday evening against Los Angeles, but were in much more control than they were in Denver last night, a...
Now, while seeing the wheels completely come off in the second period against San Jose (who really cares, I just refer to the Sharks as the team who has lost the battle of California to the Ducks and Kings, the insignificant California club in my opinion) we cannot forget the resurgence of goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Although allowing four goals on 11 shots in this period...
