Changing our focus...

Posted Friday | Comments 5
With the Vancouver Canucks season coming to a close many would expect that the blame game would be topic number one around town. In my mind that should not be the focus as the team accomplished well beyond our collective expectations and the only thing that allowed us to toy with the thought of a Stanley Cup parade was our goaltending. Roberto Luongo proved last night, wit...
Okay, first things first. Following yesterday's blog "Memorial Cup Previews" I was questioned as to how I could predict the Giants to be have a fourth place finish in this years tourney. As we all know, it is very difficult to follow a junior hockey club as we are absolutely lambasted with print after print about everything to do with the NHL. Living in a Canuck crazed mar...
Game Review - Tigers 1 - Vs Maineiacs 3 I totally missed the game but the Lewiston Maineiacs scored two second period goals and added another in the third to defeat the Medicine Hat Tigers by a 3 -1 margin. It would appear that Jonathan Bernier was at his best (yet again) as he turned asided 30 of the 31 shots that the Tigers directed at the Maineiacs goal. ...
Game Review Giants 2 vs. Maineiacs 1 This is going to be a quick entry today... Opps, I did it again! I watched a junior hockey game pretty well from begining to end, meanwhile just glancing at the NHL contest here and there. Not that I could be faulted after the show that the Giants and Maineiacs put on yesterday at the Memorial Cup tournament. Lew...
Tonight the Vancouver Giants and Medicine Hat Tigers renew their rivalry for the 8th time in since May 4th. If this were the Vancouver Canucks meeting the Minnesota Wild for the eight time in less than a month I would be extremely depressed. Fact of the matter is, these two teams hate each other and they love telling each other that they hate playing each other...does that...

My Apologies...

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
Tonight's game started with the intense vigor that I had expected but in the end...it was dull. I think the coaches really calmed the player's down, the Tigers were able to keep the crowd out of it and the game really lacked the intensity that was expected. In the end the Tigers scored the lone goal on a late second period power-play and the Giants could not muster much...

Vancouver Giants vs Plymouth Whalers Time: 5:00pm PST Television: Rogers Sportsnet The Vancouver Giants and Plymouth Whalers meet for the second consecutive Friday in the Memorial Cup Semi-Final. The Giants have looked better throughout the course of the tournament but as with every hockey game there are under-lying factors that may play agains...

What's That Noise?

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
That noise is the pounding of the Plymouth Whalers by the Vancouver Giants and for the ninth time in the month of May the Giants will face the Medicine Hat Tigers. Feeling the pressure of the let down with Wednesday's loss, the Giants took it to the Whalers early with Wacy Rabbit beating Michael Neuvirth on the games first shot. Before the first period was out Michal R...
My devotion to the Vancouver Giants of the WHL is new. I’ve come to realize recently that it’s a selfish act, because my new hobby permits me three of my favorite indulgences. First: It represents yet another excuse to interact with the lively swarm of personalities on HockeyBuzz chat in ways I didn’t think that simple typing allowed. A work-at-home dev...

Sunday afternoon the WHL Vancouver Giants -- coached by my old friend of more than thirty years, Don "Hayzer" Hay -- will be playing for junior hockey's ultimate prize, the Memorial Cup, against the Medicine Hat Tigers before a no doubt sold out house at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, B.C.. Over the past few months, the Giants have be...
People may ask, how does a guy living in Massachusetts get hooked onto Vancouver Giants hockey. The answer is simple really, I love hockey, and the team at the time had just gotten Wacey Rabbit in a trade from Saskatoon. You see, Wacey Rabbit and Milan Lucic are teammates on the Vancouver Giants, and both are also prospects in the Boston Bruins organization. Once Wacey ...
Is anyone out there watching this? You gotta love it when they let the players play! I will blog later but for now: Comments on the game?
What a glorious aftrnoon of fellowship and the pure joy of hockey could be found in the HockeyBuzz Chatroom today! For almost four hours, a diverse group of us HB chatters eschewed family BBQs, a day at the beach, and other recreations of a beutiful holiday weekend Sunday afternoon to huddle by our computers and join, albeit in cyberspace, the crowd of 16,281 that f...

Posted Monday | Comments 0
First and foremost congratulation to the Vancouver Giants on winning the 2007 Master Card Memorial Cup, and also a big round of applause to the 3 other teams that competed for the title the Medicine Hat Tigers, Plymouth Whalers and the Lewiston Maineiacs. For those who do not follow Jr. Hockey the Memorial Cup is a very difficult championship to win. The C...

I received the following email from my old friend of thirty years, Vancouver Giants coach Don Hay, this morning in response to my passing along the congratulations of the HockeyBuzz chatters on the Giants' MC championship: Hi Scoop, Thanks for your support. Joey had been keeping me informed on the two of you emailing back and forth and to still have those old...
When you're the Manchester Phoenix, that's who. Last night in the Altrincham Ice Dome, the Phoenix beat Hull Stingrays 3-2 in the second leg of the British Knockout Cup. The result of the first leg was 5-3 to Hull Stingrays, so Manchester needed to win by 3 clear goals to progress to the final. And they were 3 goals ahead up until 56.57 when Nikolai Ladygin scored for H...
That was the story for Coventry on Sunday. After deservedly going one down at the end of the first period, they rallied to score seven goals in the second to ease past thier rivals, Cardiff Devils. Cardiff are short-benched at the moment, missing their starting NM so were always going to struggle.. but it was the superior creativity and finishing of Coventry in the 2nd...
Joey Kenward is the play-by-play voice of the defending Memorial Cup champion WHL Vancouver Giants. __________________ Now that the 2008 Playoffs are underway in the WHL, I thought I might provide a quick recap of how each series has gone to this point. The Western Conference match-ups on paper are not nearly as close as those in the East, based primarily on how ...
