Sidney Crosby leads all Eastern Conference vote getters by over a 2:1 margin. Will he end the season with over 240 points and is he twice as good as his closest talent? I say assuredly "No." The leading scorer in the NHL and the best player in the NHL today is Vincent Lecavalier and he has less than one third the votes of Sid. What gives? Daniel Briere, a great player last season sits in third place in voting and he doesn't even crack the top 30 NHL scoring list. What gives?
I look forward to seeing if the Western Conference fares any better as the Crosby results can possibly be attributed, at least partially, to the major endorsement/marketing campaigns of the NHL, EA Sports, Reebok, etc. Since the west doesn't have the major endorsement players like Crosby, Ovie, and Staal, the WC voting numbers may be little tighter and make a little more sense. I have seen Turco and Spezza on the NHL08 advertisement, but that's about it for the west. If either of those guys lead the WC by a 2:1 margin, then we know the power of advertisements/marketing. What do you think? Post your surprises and your disdain here.
Yo thanks for leaving those comments on my blog a ways back.Couldn't agree more about the Sidney Crosby and over-hyped media stuff.I'm a Flyers fan and I don't think Briere deserves to be 3rd on the ballet. Lecavalier is clearly dominating the league and the east.
