It still hurts to talk about the loss last night. Believe it or not, despite giving up 8 goals, Hannu Toivenan can’t be blamed for the loss. The loss was a total breakdown on all defensive fronts.
How many times was brewer going to be out of position?
How many times was the 6 foot 2 Backman outmuscled on the puck?
How many times did the defense watch Colorado set up and tap in the easy doorstep goal?
The answer: 9 times.
And after about the third point or so, did the Blues plan on putting a body on Hejduk and roughing him up a little bit?
Looking back on the game, I can’t think of one goal that Colorado scored where I said to myself, ‘Well, that was just a great offensive play. There was nothing much more the ‘d’ could have done.’
It was brutal to watch. So pitiful, in fact, that it’s exhausting thinking about it.
Usually, we talk about the Blues offense being the Achilles heel, and the defensive end winning the games. But last night was the opposite.
Positive Bluenotes:
Jay McClement had his first two goal game of his career. John Kelly and Bernie Federko only mentioned it 8,547 times, and that was only during the second period. McClement showed promise last year, but this year, at times, I often wonder if he knows that the JV plays earlier in the night...Hopefully, he's back on track.
David Perron scored again. I want everyone to note how the puck stays in the zone when Perron is on the ice. His line keeps good, sustained pressure when he’s out there. I’m glad the Blues are keeping this kid. You know, Backes roomed with Tkachuk and Johnson lives in Al MacInnis’ basement. Why is this 19 year old living in a hotel room? A veteran player could really keep this guy on the right track.
this is one game and I hope it won't continue, you also have to look at the fact that the Avs are dominant at home and the Blues have always had trouble playing there. I agree that Perron should be taken under some veteran's wing...Doug Weight maybe? he would be perfect, or Tkachuk could take another one in...but I believe that we will come out in our next game on Tuesday and really show that it was a one game thing....Andy Murray will make sure to make that message clear
Sorry but I saw a few nice goals from the Avs. I guess it was a good offensive night from us and a bad defensive night for you guys.
