One of the main reasons why the schedule changed is so people around the league could see the Alex and Sid shows at least once a year.
Okay, yes, I know. A lot of non-hockey fans might come to the game to see them play, but let me just go off on a hockey fan rant here for a second about why I never want to see the best players on the other team.
Because, not only do I want to see the Blues win, I want to see them mercilessly crush the other team into oblivion.
The best players playing for the other team means my team has a better chance of winning. And what's more fun? Telling people Ovechkin walked eric brewer like it was a dog show, or talking about how we crushed the Capitals 6-1? Personally, I could go my whole life without seeing Ovechkin playing in person if it meant the Blues would win more games. It's not like I can't watch him on youtube.
Admit it. The only thing better than winning is winning games where everything goes your way. C'mon, you know you hit 'reset' on NHL 94 when the other team would score. Or, when they announce the scratches and you're playing Detroit, you're hoping for this one night that Zetterburg might have the flu or something.
(Side note: on my internet browser, it underlines in red Zetterburg and gives me Jitterbug as an option to replace it. Interesting. My computer has a nickname suggestion for someone with ridiculous hands.)
So, in other words, I love watching Sidney Crosby on national television, as long as its at a safe distance and not when he's owning my home town team. Please, stay in the East.

I don't want the schedule change for individual players. Like you, I think youTube is enough and maybe some day we'll meet in the playoffs and that will provide even MORE reason to loathe their abundance of raw talent. However, I DO want a schedule change. For me it has nothing to do with individual stars; that's a mere footnote. I am sick of seeing Western Canadian teams only twice every two years and only once in our arena. That's ludicrous. I also think that it's ludicrous that Detroit and Chicago barely ever play their original six rivals, who that have SO much history with!!! If we don't help keep these rivalries alive hockey is going to lose a VERY special part of its soul. So yeah, seeing Joe Thornton and Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla a little more often is nice but I want to see their teams more than anything.
Would crushing the Capitals 6-1 mean much of anything if they didn't have talent like Ovechkin on their team? As a Flyers fan, I love seeing them rack up the points to clinch a playoff spot. But the games I most enjoy watching, whether on TV or in the stands, are the games that they battle out against great teams like Ottawa and Minnesota and against great players like Sidney Crosby or Roberto Luongo. Because I want to see my team be greater than the "great ones" in this league.
I disagree. I can't stand watching any game, in any sport where one team totally destroys the other team. Blues 8, other team 0, boring game to me. Oh, except if they blow out Detroit. Then I would hope I had taped the game and would watch it over and over again. I know Detroit fans, its a dream. But dang it! Its my dream!
Original six meetings are appealing. Competition is ratings. Three goal leads risk a channel change.Fans cried and the NHL listened. Most fans only watch on tv. NHL should reduce the schedule and increase the playoffs to 5 out of 9. BRING BACK HOME WHITES!
Schedule change is good for many reasons, most outlined in comments above. I second the Home Whites request. In addition to a little variety, we also get to see something besides every other team's repetitive (and eventually boring) road whites at home games. Yeah, it'll add a little confusion figuring out who's who at first glance when watching 'NHL On the Fly' recaps, but we'll manage! Mix it up a little NHL.
i think the red wings suggestion to go back to an 84 game schedule is a better idea. two more games that mean something for the right price. unlike in preseason where you find sloppier play and the same ticket prices. i'm for playing each team home and away each year. it creates a balance plus, i'd love to see sid play here in town. some of these players might not know enough about st. louis but experiencing it just a bit more and whatever it is they hear, it might cause them to think about it come free agency time. also, these next few years i want fans in all the other cities to feel envious of what i get to see on a regular basis.
