I think that Brian Burke is an overrated General Manager and alot of his praise should be given to Senators GM Brian Murray. The only good move he has made was the pronger deal. He lost Penner to RFA when he had ample time to sign him. Neidermeyer only signed because his brother plays on the team, it had nothing to do with Brain Burke. He signed Bertuzzi to a moronic deal which makes him un-tradable. I think you have to look back when he was the GM of the Canucks and road Cloutier for all those years. That is the main reason the Canucks never won a cup. The ducks were a team that was stacked before he cam into town. I think there are alot of better GM's out there right now and it makes me cringe when I hear that the leafs want this guy. I know he said on off the record that he like the ducks, but the money they guy would get from the leafs would be enough to make him eat his words.
Brian Burke is a winner because he's got the guts to speak-up to ownership and also to make changes as he sees fit. He's as smart as any GM, and any team would be fortunate to have him.Just be prepaired to give him total control, because he's not into being anyone's puppet.Speaking about the Canucks, what has Nonis done except from keeping the status quo.Any moron knew Bertuzzi had to go, and if an idiot like Keenan dangled a player like Luongo...........
Murray deserves a good deal of praise for the Ducks Stanley Cup and to be fair, Burke has given him plenty of credit. Niedermayer's brother may have been a factor in his signing with Anaheim,, but it is not as if he gave them a discount. Bertuzzi's deal does seem like a lot, but Burke is displaying loyalty to one of his favorite players, and honestly, Bert has really started to get back to his old form. As for Penner, why would you hand that much money to a guy who disappeared in the playoffs. Burke is a smart hockey guy and very good GM.
You have to also look at the day to day transactions Burke does. He was the extra piece the Ducks needed, much like Pronger. The Bertuzzi contract will have to be a wait and see, but he is playing very good hockey right now. Cloutier is terrible, and might never play in the NHL again, so he doesn't deserve to even be discussed.Who are the top 5 GM at this time? Rank'em.
Kingduck:1. Paul Holmgren2. Paul Holmgren3. Paul Holmgren4. Brian Burke5. Paul HolmgrenActually, I'd have to go Ken Holland, Lou Lamoriello, Burkie, Doug Wilson and David Poile
Ducky Jets.I guess you can do Burkes Job!What a joke
Hey man, don't be angry because the Oil are stuck with Penner and are STILL losing! Let's look at what BB has done this year, stole Brandon Bochenski from Boston for Shane Hnidy... Doug Weight for Andy McDonald was probably a wash but Mac was doing nothing this year when he was a Duck...stole Brian Sutherby from the Capitals for a mid-round pick. And he did all of this while clearing contract room for next year to re-sign Corey Perry. The Ducks have won five in a row and are in first place in the Pacific. What's KLowe done and what position are the Oil in again?
Why would Brian Burke worry about Dustin Penner at that point in the game, he still had to Sign Kunitz, Getzlaf
Bochensky is a one dimensional player that is why he gets moved so much. Penner has been a point a game player since xmas. I'm not saying that he isn't over paid but as a G.M you have to kow that the possiblity of an offer sheet is coming. As for the oilers they are a total rebuild team. I dont expect them to win a cup for atleast 3 years. Duxcup07 Sutherby is a 3rd to 4th liner. If you want to praise moves like that then JFJ should be praised for his pick up of Dominique Moore. My top Gm's would be in this order.Ken Holland- He has kept the Wings a number one contender for years now. He is great in the draft and always seems to keep a winning product on the ice.Lou Lamerello- He has been behind 4 cup champions in a small market.Paul Holmgren- The fact that he came in a as an interm GM and was able to improve the club so much in such little time to me is amazing. He made room for the UFA's and got a hefty return in Forsberg.Dave Nonis -for the simple fact that he was able to pick up Luongo enough said.Darryl Sutter- He turned around the Flames into Contenders fro Pretenders has a cup final apperance
there's no defending edmonton's signing of Dustin Penner... Vanek would have at least fit in playing with Ales Hemsky... Penner was a square peg for a round hole. He may turn out decently, but the price in draft picks was definitely not worth it... were I Burke, I too would not have matched...
I agree that Burke is overrated. This is not to say that he is not a very good GM, but one of the best? Not from where I sit. Dumping Fedorov and picking up Pronger were both great moves... but really... there's about 8 guys that I think are on par or better as a GM than Burke... realistically, I think that Dave Taylor is almost at this guy's level... were I the Leafs and looking at established GMs employed by other teams... I'd be phoning Ken Holland, David Poile, and Jim Rutherford, maybe even David Conte from NJ before I phoned Bryan Burke...
Oh, I forgot to mention, he stole Pronger from Lowe also. All of those guys you mentioned are contributing in their own way and the team is much improved over before the deals were made which I believe is a sign of a good GM.
someone's bitter hahahoh btw you guys are forgetting the marchant beauchemin deal <---talk about guys who were essential to their cup run
Do you feel better now? Thanks for the 2008 picks.
I just can't help but feel that Burke is the new Glen Sather... how many people still think Sather is one of the great NHL GM's?
Define overrated for me again? I respectfully disagree. Sports are about winning, and Burke has done that. It is not always how you build it, but what you do with it during and after the process. Lamerello and Holland, then Burke. Dave Taylor?? With one hand tied behind his back, which is how he must have been with the Kings, he is average at best. Let's see how this season turns out. I am not saying your wrong, but if you win Cups or at least get there, you're are doing a good job. That can change quicky though, as you so well know. It depends what the expectations are. Last year, the Ducks were predicted to win. Check. This year, the Sharks are predicted. Let's see. I can't say who will be "The Best GM" and win, but I can tell you who won't.........
I'd take Burke over Lowe any day of the week. But with that being said, I sure am glad we got Murray in Ottawa.
Aneheim didn't steal Pronger.....They gave up alot to get him. Lupul brought in Joni.and also helped bring in Penner. I belive they gave up 2 first rounders in the deal because they made it to the cup final. So they never stole him. Stealing him would be getting nothing in return. Burke helped the Oilers rebuild for the future. Everyone is saying this guy is a winner but I disagree. He walked into a gold mine with the ducks organization. Its not like he had to make any big moves to build the team. The nucleus was there already. Trading fedorov was a no brainer it was merley a salary dump. Getzlaff, Perry, Penner were all brought in by Murray. The Goaltender was already in place. He made no great deal breaking moves. Getting Pronger was a good aquisition but what Im saying is besides that he hasnt done anything the team was already there. I'm not saying he is a horrible GM what im saying is that he is an Overrated GM. There are better GM's out there. This is a guy who talks alot so the media love him. He was in Vancouver for years and there were problems mainly goaltending that he never covered. I heard him last night on off the record say that he likes building strong physical hockey teams. Well I have news for you Vancouver was all europeans. The sedins, Olund, Malik, Naslund, the list goes on and on. They were not a physical team besides the fact that they had Bertuzzi. Bryan Murray Built that physical team he is reffereing to.
Sidney Crosby is over rated. So what? So he makes $6M a year and won the Hart and Ross in 2007. Ovie is over rated. So what? So he will make $10M a year going forward. Penner is over rated. So what? So he makes $4M per year. Burke is over rated. So what? So he won the Stanely Cup last year. You can easily make a case for players/people being over rated. So what? Ever known anyone who got promoted one or 2 levels because they happened to be at the right place at the right time and the right people above them left a company? It happens. Does it mean they don't belong there? No. Does it mean they didn't do anything right along the way to get themselves into a fortunate situation? No. Just let Burke enjoy the success. Deserved or not. He has repeatedly given a ton of credit to Bryan Murray. Murray began the process and Burke finished it. Many people can make the case that Burke put the "key" pieces in to place. The pieces that made them a playoff team under Murray into a Stanley Cup Champion under Burke. Arguing either is fruitless and both are right and both are wrong. If you wrote this blog to argue for argument's sake, then admit it. If you argue to make yourself feel better about your own current condition, then that is just sad.
Not taking anything away from Murray, but the brand of Hockey that the ducks played under Murray and Babcock was not a physical brand of hockey. Burke and Carlyle brought that to the ducks. That was one of the reasons the ducks won the cup, they were a physical team that wore you down and Burke brought that style (and coach) with him.
I see I hit a sore spot from the handful of Duck fans on this site. Ducksfan07 what would my current condition be that I come from a hockey background have played the game and like to talk about the game and the people in it. If this was a rant on Sundin I would have half the free world posting on here lol.......This wasn't an arguement it is my own personal opinion. If you cant handle other peoples views your on the wrong website.
My hole point of the blogg was to give my thoughts on the next GM of the Toronto Maple leafs. Come Summer he will be the GM of the leafs with out a doubt. MLSE will give him an offer he can't refuse and he will accept.
To support my guess. 1.) Him and Richard Peddie are friends. He said numerous times that Richard was a good guy and would not down him on OTR. To me this is a guy keeping his options open and he also knows that the leafs are the Yankees of the NHL and loves the spotlight not to mention the sick amount of money that will be thrown his way. Of course the guy is going to say he loves the ducks and that he is under contract that is what any professional would do. He'll be a leaf in the near future. I just wish that they would get someone else because I think there are better candidates then him.
Uh, Burke won't leave for money alone. The Ducks owners, the Samueli's are the owners of a company called Broadcom and they make computer chips that are in every cell phone that's made. They are multi-billionare's so money won't be a problem. I'm sure they'll match whatever Toronto can come up with. Besides, BB is under contract for another 2 years I believe. Do you think MLSE will let things go to hell for two more years waiting for their so-called savior when, as you state, he isn't very good at his job anyway?
He orcastrated the deal to draft the Sedin's 2nd and 3rd overall. That was a pretty sweet move.
He can walk away from his contract at any time with permission. If he shows interest in another position do you really think that the Ducks are going to force him to stay if he wants out. When a GM wants out they almost always grant permission to other teams to talk negotiations. That sedin move was a good move but look how long it took them to come around. But this isn't as much what he has done in Vacouver as to him walking into a stacked team in Anaheim. I never said he was a bad GM I just think the media over hypes him because of his broadcasting job at TSN and the fact that he is a mouth piece
If Burke has an option to go to Toronto all the hockey insiders are saying he'll take the job. If you people in the USA got OTR you would have seen him dodge the question and also how he talked about Richard Peddie like they were Pals. Burke is an ego maniac and if he had the oppurtunity to turn around the most declorated franchise in the NHL into a cup winner he would do it in a heart beat.
How ironic (gotta love irony): Anaheim wins the cup, Lowe makes blunder after blunder after blunder after...and has a team going nowhere...and Burke is over-rated? ROFLMAO! Burke has made the right moves in Anaheim -- both last year and this. Not only that, he was the guy who totally turned the Canucks around after Keenan destroyed them. The only thing he didn't do in Vancouver was get a goalie. Here comes the irony again -- Nonis got the goalie --from Keenan. Oh yeah, Burke kind of worked his butt off to get picks 2 and 3 so he could get a couple of decent players in Daniel and Hank. I'd say he's done a fine job as GM in the NHL and is one of the top ones...and just to rub it in a bit, I'd rank Lowe in the bottom 5 -- just like his team.
Burke is a great thinker with experiance on both sides of the players and the league. No offense ducky but this comes across as sour grapes and not really substantial. When Edmonton gets the lottery ball picked this year and moves to the number one overall pick it will be brian burke going up to the podium to pick and trust me, he won't even remember who Penner is at that moment. It was shrewd to not sign penner to the money Lowe offered, it was a bad move for the entire league when Lowe did that and Burke made that clear as well. He brought Vancouver back to respectability and he brought the ducks a cup and however you want to shred it he has done well if not outstanding. For the record my picks for best G.M. are:Lou Lemoriello- maybe the most crafty G.M. in the leagueDarrell Sutter- See kipper, tanguay, langkow, huselius...for nothing.Doug Wilson- Thornton anyone?? who went the other way??Brian Burke- cup in anaheim, great draft record, succes everywhere, leader for change.Ken Holland- no matter what happens or who retires this team always has great players.
Sane - I like your list. Well thought out. Other than Lou, I don't know many GMs in the East anyway, so I would be weighted heavy to the West too.
