Kings Development Camp Scrimmage Recap

I just got back from the scrimmage and thought I would do a little write-up for all the Kings fans. I haven't see it, but I was told the broadcast was horrible so I hope this helps.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with how it was structured (since I had no clue before I went), there were two 25 minute games and if the score remained tied by the end of the 2nd, it would go to a shoot-out. Also, if a player got fouled, he would receive a penalty shot instead of the offending team going shorthanded. (I wish I would have taken a video of that because it was really quite amusing to see. They would set the player up at center ice, and when the whistle blew, he would take off with all the rest of the guys chasing after him) Also, the Home team was dressed in white and the away team was dressed in purple.

I will post the notes I took (and keep in mind I was trying to write and watch at the same time so they may seem scattered) for Game 1 first and then Game 2 in another post. At the end of the second summary, I will give my analysis on who I think excelled and who I think struggled.

Game 1

Starting in Goal:
*Zatkoff (white)
*Bernier (purple)

#44, Drewiskie, made a great blocked shot (can't remember against who)

#40, Roe, is a little guy but not afraid to get in the tough spots and scrap for the puck if needed.

Bernier made a great save on #71, Rankle, from about 3ft out. I was almost certain he was beat, but he is definitely quick to reposition himself, and made the save.

#80, Doughty, made a huge hit on #50, Holloway (was dressed in white), which really is what initiated the rest of the guys to start checking harder.

#82, Wudrick, very effectively took #71, Rankle, off the puck allowing his team to gain possession. Was a pretty impressive defensive play by a forward.

#57, Simmonds, is not affraid to use his body to get to the puck. Was making some pretty big checks for a forward.

#81, Campbell, received a penalty shot and missed.

#78, Bagnall, was the most impressive, for me, of all the d-men at the scrimmage. Given that he's a bit older than many of the other guys there, his experience definitely showed.

# 74, King, receives a penalty shot and missed

#57, Simmonds, and # 76, Voynov, (both in white) were streaking down the ice in a 3 on 2 when a mis-communication between them caused a mid-ice collision between the two players. Because of their speed, they hit each other pretty hard and both went down. Immediately after, both went to the bench for a change.

#83, Lokitionov, made a very nifty maneuver around another guy before driving to the net for a shot. He got held along the way and received a penalty shot too, but hesitated way to long to get a shot off and was stripped of the puck before he even had a chance.

Game 1 ended with no score


Game 2

Starting in Goal:
*Rowat (purple)
*Taylor (white)

Very early on, #57, Simmonds, receives a penalty shot and misses.

At 19:16 , #40, Roe, scores the a goal for the white team, assisted by #44, Drewiskie, and #71, Rankle

At 16:14, purple switched goalies, and Quick was put in net

#60, Dravecky, and # 51, Moller, both in white, collide with each other rendering themselves useless on the developing play.

#40, Roe, made a surprisingly big hit on # 70, Weiss, and completely made Weiss ineffective.

#78, Bagnall, is a very hard hitter, which may be a welcome addition to the big club.

# 85, Nolet, got very obviously hooked by #82, Wudrick, and received a penalty shot which was missed

White made an attempt to pull the goailie at the 1:30 minute mark, but couldn't keep possession of the puck. Eventually, Quick was able to get off the ice, but by then it was too late.

Shots on Goal:

Game 2 ends with the White team winning 1-0. There was no shootout.


My Analysis

The 2 guys that stood out to me the most were Bagnall (D-man) and Roe (Forward) . I don't know how many years these guys have played with the team, but they definitely should join the big club. To me, Bagnall was a very solid stay-at-home d-man that many guys had an extremely hard time getting around, if at all. He loves to make big hits, strips guys off the puck very well, and positions himself to block shots and take away passing lanes also. Based on what I've seen today, I would want him on the roster tomorrow. Roe, for being only 5'8", plays just as big as anyone on the ice. He's very scrappy, and isn't afraid to get into the corners and position himself in front of the net (even though he may be crushed). He's got great speed, and given that he was the only player to find the twine, should definitely get considered to break the roster. I would nearly compare him to Danny Briere in how he plays.

As far as goalies, Bernier looked great, which is what I expected based on what I've read, but I'm not sure if I would bring him up just yet. I've heard that goalies are a delicate bunch in that if you rush their development, it could destroy any progress they may have made. Zatkoff didn't face many shots but was able to save every one he did. Quick was able to keep the game to a one goal difference. Rowat was the only one to let a goal in. All of them did well with the penalty shots.

Guy that struggled the most was # 33, Westgarth. He's got great size, but he's not a very good skater and has trouble handling the puck.

If you want to know some specific info on some of the players, feel free to ask! I will give a brief analysis of Teubert, Doughty, Wudrick, and Azevedo in a few hours for those who are interested.

Edited: Here's my analysis of Teubert, Doughty, Wudrick. and Azevedo...in that order.

Of the two d-men picked up by the Kings in the first round of the Draft this year, I would say Teubert is the guy to watch out for. He is quite the beast, as I've heard people refer to him. What impressed me most was his ability to read the play and make plays where he not only renders the player on the puck useless, but also takes away the passing lanes. He is another one that like to hit hard and was difficult for the other team to get around. I say he's ready now.

As much hype that there is about the kid, I could see the possibility of Doughty spending a year in the AHL. He is a good two way player, but there just seems to be something lacking from his game that I can't quite put my finger on. And it doesn't help that his team faced so many shots in the first game, and ended up losing in the end. He is great at moving the puck up ice though, and that hit he put on Holloway was definitely one that stung a bit. If he can make whatever adjustment he needs to by the pre-season, then I can see him cracking the roster.

There was just something about Wudrick that impressed me at the practice on Sunday (maybe it was his fancy puck handling skills he displayed after the practice was over) that made me want to keep an eye on this kid at the scrimmage. I have to say, he's pretty good. I mentioned before that he was very defensively minded for a forward, but he is very effective at it. The only thing I would criticize is that he needs to be more aware of where his stick is going when not positioned on the ice. He made an extremely blatant hook on another player that would have never happened if he was a little more cautious.

Lastly, Azevedo. I have to start by saying that I was impressed with what I saw of him playing during the Memorial Cup. That said, I truly didn't realize how small he really is until I had the chance to see him in person next to the other players. He is tiny! However, he doesn't let his size keep him from getting into the tough spots. I noticed he liked to position himself in front of the net. Also, he has great speed, probably because he has too. And his biggest attribute is that he never gives up, even if he doesn't stand a chance against the other guy. If he can gain any amount of size, then he has a chance. At his current stature, I fear he would get crushed, but I hope he proves me wrong on that because he really has some talent that could be beneficial to the team.
