After checking the stats of defenseman on NHL.com I decided that the most accurate way to rate the top Dmen are through points, +/-, and minutes played. When we look at the top 20 in each of these categories there are only 4 players who appear in all of them.
Mike Green 8pts +4 27:33
Nicklas Lidstrom 7pts +6 26:04
Brian Campbell 6pts +5 27:09
Andrei Markov 10pts +4 25:17
There are also 3 players that made 2 of the top 20.
Dion Phaneuf 7pts +2 28:26
Mark Streit 7pts -2 26:04
Keith Ballard 8pts +2 25:24
There has been a lot of speculation by Sabres fans that Brian Campbell was nowhere near worth the money he received from Chicago. The numbers tell a different story.(Although defensive play cannot always be measured by numbers) The average salary of these top 4 players is 6.585 mil with Campbell coming in at 7.14.
So who is your pick for best defenseman in the league? Do any of these players make your cut or is it someone rock steady without the numbers. Is there a better way to judge who the best Dmen are or is it just a matter of opinion?
Mike Van Ryn. Star in waiting
Kuba is outscoring them all, and is 20th in TOI. Also, if he got one more , he would be 19th in the league in /-He's obviously the best defenseman in the league.
Lids plays a dominant game , even if he doesn't lead in points he is still the best their is right now.markov close second with the ranking system you have put up
Sorry, I missed Kuba. For some reason on my list I only had the top 19 for minutes played. He is playing really well so far this year. I still have to say that Lidstrom is the guy you have to compare yourself to. Mike Van Ryn has had some opportunities in Florida and has played pretty well, but he definitely does not have star status.
I'm pretty sure Shea Weber should be up there.
