Today, the Flyers lost a tough game by the score of 3-2 in overtime against the Hurricanes. This was a game that the Flyers could have easily won, but Cam Ward just played one heck of a game. You gotta give credit where credit is due. In the second period, the Flyers had numerous opportunities to score against Ward, but he shut the Flyers down. In my pregame blog, I said that the Flyers needed to be ready to play because the Hurricanes were going to come out hard. The Flyers almost won this game, but the second period was a back-breaker. In the first period, the Flyers got a goal from Joffrey Lupul, who needed it big time. Even though the Flyers led 1-0 after 1 period of play, they didn't play their best hockey. In the second period, they had all those chances as I mentioned, but Ward came up big. Finally, it came back to bite the Flyers because another player scored his first goal against the Flyers. It was Patrick Dwyer. Then about a minute later, Tuomo Ruutu scored to give the Canes a 2-1 lead. However, the Flyers fought back to tie it on the power play when Jeff Carter scored. That was a big goal for the Flyers to even the game. In the third period, Jeff Carter looked like he got hurt, as he hit his shoulder funny. Jeff would be okay, and he returned. Then not long after that, Marty Biron got hit around the neck with the puck. It stung Marty for a few seconds, but he would be fine. Nobody scored in the third period, then the game went into overtime. Unfortunately, the struggling Sergei Samsonov scored and the Flyers lost the game. The Hurricanes got the puck and Samsonov went past Luca Sbisa, and was able to barely get by Matt Carle, and got the puck past the left side of Marty Biron. In my mind, I thought the Flyers played hard and they had energy, but there was just something missing with their game today. I honestly don't know what it was, but something just seemed different. They had plenty of chances against Cam Ward, but as I said earlier, you have to give credit where credit is due. However, even though the Flyers had plenty of chances against Ward, they were in their own zone a lot. The Canes had put some pressure on the Flyers in their own zone a lot during this game. Now I know there are some people who want to say that Marty can't make the big save, and I respect everyone's opinions, but come on now, Marty kept the Flyers in this game and still made big saves. Unfortunately, Samsonov was able to get past Luca Sbisa and Matty to win the game. You can't blame Marty for the loss. The Flyers just didn't capitalize on their opportunities. When you don't capitalize on your opportunites, it will come back to bite you all the time. Josh Gratton and Wade Brookbank dropped em' again and it was good fight. However, the fight that we were all amazed about was Metro Man dropping the gloves against Patrick Eaves. Nice job Metro for sticking up for yourself. All the Flyers can do is just look ahead to tomorrow night's matchup against the Leafs. Tomorrow night's game is going to be big because it is Saturday night, and it's Hockey night in Canada, so the Flyers have to play well tomorrow night. I expect a hard working effort from the Flyers tonight, and they'll definitely need it.
