Flyers destroy Bolts 6-1

What an amazing game it was tonight for the Flyers. Unbelievable. The Flyers scored three goals in the third period, as they put a beating on the Bolts 6-1 tonight. Going into this game, I didn't think that the Flyers were going to score six goals against Mike Smith. Obviously, I'm a huge Mike Smith fan, and I would love to see him in a Flyers uniform. Luckily for the Flyers, they caught Smitty at the right time and they were able to score at a good rate against him. Jeff Carter and Mike Richards both scored twice for the Flyers tonight, and they are looking like the two that we saw in the first half this season.

In the first period, it was Richie that got the goal scoring started. He scored at 7:03 to give the Flyers a 1-0 advantage. Not long before that, Riley Cote and David Koci dropped the gloves and went at it. When watching that fight, you could tell that Riley really wanted to win that fight, and he did so. However, the Flyers 1-0 lead would be snapped late in the period when Vinny Prospal scored on the power play to tie the game up at one a piece. Penalties have just been finding a way to bite the Flyers in the behind lately, and it did right there. Not long after the Prospal power play goal, Mark Recchi had an apparent goal that was called no goal at first. The refs had the war room in Toronto to look it over, and in the end, it was called a no goal, so the game was still tied at 1-1 after the 1st period.

The second period was a very fiesty period to say the least. There was fighting, pushing, shoving, and some goal scoring. Randy Jones got into the fun and he scored a power play goal to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. It looks like he is starting to regain his form from last season. Later on, Richie scored again, and it gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead. The chippiness also came into play. Braydon Coburn and Ryan Malone were called for penalties at 17:24. Coby was called for roughing, while Malone was called for high sticking. However, it's obvious when looking at the replay that Malone was diving. Maybe he got some tips from Sid up in Pittsburgh, eh? Seven seconds after Coby and Malone left the box, they dropped the gloves, and Coby threw some bombs. We all know that Coby is not a fighter, but when he has to drop em', he can throw em'.

In the third period, the Flyers ran away with the game, as they peppered Mike Smith. However, Marty St. Louis was able to get a penalty shot attempt. Antero Niittymaki stopped St. Louis on the penalty shot, and the game remained 3-1 Flyers. About three minutes later, Jeff Carter scored his 31st goal of the season when he took a shot from the point, and Joffrey Lupul was there in front of the net to possibly deflect it. Lupul got the initial goal, but it was changed, and Carts got the goal. Not too long after Carts's goal, Scotty Hartnell got on the board to make it 5-1 Flyers. That was Scotty's 18th goal of the season, and Niitty also assisted on that goal, his first assist of the season. With about seven minutes left in the game, Jeff Carter led the way for the leave of Mike Smith. Carts scored again to make it 6-1, and Smitty was pulled from the game. Smitty was not happy whatsoever, as he was hitting his goalie stick on the ground at the bench, then knocked down the remaining sticks there. I could only imagine the damage that occured in the locker room. For the Flyers, Antero Niittymaki made 41 saves in this game, and in my opinion, that was outshadowed because of the big nights of Jeff Carter and Mike Richards. I'll say this, I think when Niitty starts, the Flyers feel looser for some sort of reason. Niitty has played very well this season, and that's part of it, but there is just something else about it that makes the Flyers play loose when Niitty is in the net. Mike Smith made 24 saves for the Bolts.

i would only have to say that Coburn has had very sad attempts at fighting until tonight. Tonight he landed some BOMBS! Way to go Coburn. He had a great game overall. You could tell he had his pants on fire a bit from the get-go.

Grade A effort and exeution by Flyers. Could hav been 8-1 if not for some splendid, unorthodx saves by Smith. I agree with you R18 on seeing Mike Smith in a Flyers uniform...he would be a perfect fit for thier transistion game with his puck handling skills. Last night only further convinced me that Nitty should be signed long term as a solid back up, Flyers grab themself an established starter, and let go of Biron..
