The Peca Rumors we're constant. The Sabres, Rangers and Leafs were at the top of the list but is seems as though EVERY team was linked to Peca at some point. Evrey team but Columbus that is.
At first blush it seems like an odd match. At this point, Peca is the classic "final piece to the puzzle" type player and columbus hasn't even gotten all the piece out the jigsaw box yet. Strong in his own end and great on the PK and faceoffs. Seems like the exact player that every team would want for the playoff run.
As reported on Sportsline.com... "Michael Peca may have never been close to actually becoming a Ranger as GM Glen Sather chose not to make an offer to the center, says Newsday. According to the paper Sather and coach Ton Renney said they wanted to give the team's younger players a chance this season." We've also heard simmilar comments from Darcy Regier in Buffalo. I'd guess These types of teams will come knocking on Colombus’s door for Peca come February.
I think this is a great move by Columbus to play "Flip This House." (The real estate flip show on TLC). The Jackets take the small risk of paying Peca for the first half of the season and if he performs at a high level, they're holding on to the leauges hottest commodity come trade deadline day.
In essence, they flip Peca for a 1st round pick and a prospect for taking a flyer on a modest veteran contract. It's a great "can’'t lose" move by the GM. Well played!
