"Sabres Win Cup!"

The Sabres HAVE to use this weekend off as a method to cleanse thier system of the first half of the season. If they get their act together quickly, they can climb right back in the playoff hunt.

After losing 12 of their last 14 games, they can climb to the 8 spot by THIS FRIDAY if they take care of their own business (at Tampa, florida and Atlanta) and things break right for a few other teams over the next 4 days.

Amazing... They can get to #8 AND still have games in hand. Here's my "back-of-the-napkin" figuring.

Today's Standings

Here's a list of the games that matter and prefered winners. All of the outcomes below (with the exception of the Kings at Iles on Jan 31) are certainly plausible, if not probable.

Jan 29
Buffalo @ Tampa Bay - Buf
Ottawa @ N.Y. Islanders - Ott
N.Y. Rangers @ Carolina - Car
Washington @ Montreal - Mon

Jan 30
Pittsburgh @ Atlanta - Pit
Buffalo @ Florida - Buf

Jan 31
Montreal @ Washington - Mon
N.Y. Rangers @ Philadelphia - Phil
Los Angeles @ N.Y. Islanders - LA (eek!)

Feb 1
N.Y. Rangers @ New Jersey - NJ
Vancouver @ Florida - Van
Buffalo @ Atlanta - Buf

If these games go this way... here's how the standings would look on February 2.

Certainly possible. Keep the faith SabreNation!

I'd like to keep the faith, but it's very hard to do that. They're just so inconsistent. If they're going nowhere in the playoffs, I'd rather then tank and try to snag Stamkos. They lack a #1 center...hmmm...

Rather tank huh? You don't deserve to wear that slug.

I agree.... leave the slug at the door monoxide

Nice job working the numbers. This illustrates a number of things: 1. This is how mediocre the eastern conference is. 2. Had the Sabres pulled out just a couple of games during the streak of 10, they'd be at the top of the heap already. 3. Can you say parity? That being said, it just goes to show that things are never as bad (or good) as they seem. I think this week will tell you if they make the playoffs or not. They might not be in the 8th spot by Friday (asking the Rangers to drop 3 and Caps to drop 2 in a row might be too much), but if they sweep the south they'll be on a roll again. If not, we'll most likely see more one step forward two steps back behavior the rest of the way.

very good chance they can get it done. they have a very favorable schedule over the next couple weeks.

Good work, although I see Washington taking one of those two games vs. the Habs, but that still has them behind the Sabres based on your math.Another thing to consider is OT LOSSES/SHOOTOUTS. They get really annoying when you're in a chase like we are...and look, the way OT LOSSES/SHOOTOUTS went last year, that's how the Isles got in. It's tough, but it's a factor, and it's the biggest reason why we need as many wins as possible down the stretch here.Hopefully they go on a run!

Truthbluth and Cleon - if I thought the sabres even had a *shot*, I wouldn't be seeing that. They won't make the playoffs, so they're better off just tanking. Sorry for facing THE FACTS (realization that they won't make the playoffs) and wanting what's best for my team in the long run and when it really matters.Unless they make a pitch for Jokinen, or another elite player, I'm not convinced that they have a shot for the playoffs. If, miraculously, they sneak in, they still won't stand a shot. With Buffalo it's win 5, lose 5, win 5, lose 5.It's been peaks and valleys all year long.
