Something to grab on to

Posted Friday | Comments 0
No Eriksson can't be bad. But at the beginning it looked similar to the Philly game. Down 2-0 primarily due to power plays for the Kings. The Flames had some pressure but couldn't build momentum in that first. They were getting out shot, it was not pretty. The Conroy trip was an awful call. Fortunately they killed that one off. Aubin gave up a soft one to let the ...
It'll be an interesting off-season for the Flames this year. To look ahead, this will be a make or break off-season in regards to whether or not the team will be able to compete in the two or three years thereafter. Currently there is 40 million locked up towards next year's salaries, with about 10 million to spare. The question remains, what will we be able to do wi...
For me, the past 45 days have been spent wanting the playoffs to go on as long as possible, to prolong the inevitably long offseason for the Calgary Flames. Oh, and because it makes for better hockey, but I digress. The offseason is finally here. And my first blog post since the Flames' elimination from the playoffs will focus on two important Flames rumors: Daymond Langko...
For the first time since 2003, the Calgary Flames look like they have a viable 1st round draft pick with #17 in the first round. It looks as if the Flames will be looking for a forward in this slot and if the hype for D comes through, they could be staring at a pretty solid prospect being available when their time comes. But let's look around the draft for a moment and ...

October Flames

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
Well the wigs have been put away, the pumpkin in ready to go to the landfill. Yes Halloween and October are over, the NHL season is 12 games old and the Flames are 7-4-1. I was optimistic that a 5-5-2 start would have been ok considering a new coach and a new system, the 4 regulation losses except for the Dallas game (5-2) were close games that the Flames deserved a bette...
Well the 3 game road trip through eastern Canada (Sorry Buffalo, but alot of your fans live in Hamilton) and with a 2-0-1 record you would think things in Sutterville would be all rosy. BUT they aren't. The numbers in the 3 games look like this; Montreal 1-0 win, pp 1-3, pk 3-3, Shots for 31 against 25 Buffalo 2-1 SO loss, pp 0-4, pk 3-4, Shots for 26 against 33 Toront...
Under Achievers: Daymond Langkow: 4.5 million cap hit- In the last 4 years Langkow has gotten 33, 30, 21 and now on pace for 15. At 4.5 million his "all around" game isn't worth it anymore. He's not Calgary's best face off center, he's not the best goal scorer or assist guy. He's not the best +/- center. What is he but expensive? If the trend continues he is going to co...
The talk has been about what the plan would be in the off season should the Flames capitulate and not make the playoffs, it can be tough to see what a player is really worth unless you are outside looking in or are an actual professional scout. Having said that the Flames have a few guys that could be shipped so here are some comparables to let you know what they MIGHT be ...
If the Flames had an info-mercial for the draft it would sound like this: A guy with a "NHL GM" name tag picks up the phone and says, "Gee... I wish I could improve my team right away instead of drafting, I think we can win now but just are missing a few pieces..." sigh. (appearing out of nowhere and obviously reading off queue cards) D.Sutter, "WELL... fear not my...
After dissecting the backend and goaltending situation of the Calgary Flames I thought I would conclude by taking a further look into the quagmire of grinders and checkers that are the Flames forwards. Currently the Flames have 10 forwards signed at $28,954,166. The rundown of players looks like this: Jarome Iginla –Age 31, $7,000,000 Daymond Langkow-Age 32, $4,5...

Flames quick hits

Posted Friday | Comments 0
So if Kotalik can be "persuaded" to play in Russia and Langkow can be buried in the IR as to not count against the cap due to his broken vertebrae in his neck...and White re-signs then what does Sutter do with the space he has left? Still too many D!!! It's almost universal everyone wants Robyn "Rocket" Regehr gone now as well as Sarich for the most part. Staios can stay, ...
Before reading on i would like to introduce the Calgary Flames Drinking Game, it's pretty simple, every time there is a Flames press conferance you do a shot when Sutter says, "To be honest". Prepare for a hangover my friends.... on to the blog... I feel confused. At first I thought I have just lost some perception, sometimes it's hard to take a step back and see wha...
O...M...G.... will this off season ever end?. Can we please get a training camp up in here?? When is that prospect camp again? I'm jonesin' hard over here for some real hockey to talk about. Last night I found myself on you tube looking up our prospects and found some cool highlights: For Backlund: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqGTuS2YjeA For Erixon: [ur...
Before we get underway with all the prospect/training camp/ fitness stuff I wanted to reflect on the importance of perspective with regards to the game. The Bill Masterton Trophy gets overlooked a lot because it's not as sexy as the Hart trophy or the Conn Smyth. This trophy is "...awarded for dedication, sportsmanship, and perseverance." Now doesn't that sound like the ki...

Langkow GONE

Langkow was traded for Lee Stempniak. What does the move mean for the Flames? Did Jay Feaster make the right move? Follow the link! http://www.thesportsroundup.com/2011/08/langk-you-very-much-daymond-langkow.html Newman twitter.com/TSRNewman

Langkow out, Stempniak in.

Flames GM Jay Feaster has continued his purging of big contracts by shipping out center Daymond Langkow in return for the unpredictable RW/LW Lee Stempniak. Langkow was acquired during the lockout year of 2004, basically replacing Craig Conroy who then GM Darryl Sutter let walk via free agency. The mantra at the time was "bigger and younger" and Langkow managed to fill ...

Bye Langkow

Last week saw another long time Flame being traded away. This time the name heading out was the veteran center, Daymond Langkow. After a successful comeback to hockey, Langkow finds himself on the Coyotes, being traded by the Flames for Lee Stempniak. Langkow, one of the leaders in Calgary's locker room, recovered from a freak injury which saw him out of action for ...
