Oops, they did it Again

A freak blizzard on December 21, 2007 which postponed the Flames and Avs game could potential turn into much more than a one day issue but instead a year ending disaster. With the Flames and Avs going to the wire, this could be one of the greatest finishes in NHL regular season history. There is also the very real possibility that it could be, depending on how you lo...
Commissioner Gary Bettman takes a lot of flack for the way he has ran and continues to run the NHL. Some of it I've always felt is undeserved. Similarly to Bud Selig and the MLB, I believe that Bettman really does things that he feels in the best interests of the league and the sport. And it's hard for me to hate someone the way plenty of fans do when I know he's got good ...
One of the more visible changes to come out of the lockout was the institution of the shootout to decide the winner of games which remained undecided after a 4-on-4 overtime. This resulted in quite a lot of excitement for fans to be sure, but also let a few rounds of a skills competition play a large part in determining standings points for a team. The original move to ...
Bill Meltzer had an interesting post today regarding the debate over whether or not the NHL should switch to shootouts in the playoffs: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=7179 I stand with Mr. Meltzer on this, and just want to add a thought I had. The people who are looking for a change in playoff format are clearly not hockey fans, or they would know how rid...

The shootout

Posted Monday | Comments 0
I have to say that I've been a proponent of the shootout since the age of 9. I was playing shootout mode on one of the NHL games for Sega Genesis when I got the idea. 'Why don't they get rid of ties and have a shootout? They're so cool!' I thought. And hey, apparently, the only thing you had to do was shoot the puck just before crossing the blue line every time you cam...

Parity or rewards for losing...

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
If you look at the standings as of Tuesday afternoon, 20 teams are above .500 and 4 teams are right at .500. How is this mathematically possible? Is this the ‘parity’ that Bettman insisted would exist under the new CBA, or is it just an illusion? Why are the standings like this? Because the NHL rewards losing teams that are tied after regulation. At one tim...

The influence of the extra point

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
I had about two and a half hours to kill over the Christmas break, so I thought I'd spend the time doing a little research on something that had been interesting me. In the past few seasons, we've seen an unusually large number of teams very close in the standings; this year has been no different, with really only two teams (Detroit, Ottawa) distancing themselves from t...
Okay, I've had it with this 1pt for losing in OT/Shoot out. Officially, there are only 6 teams with losing records in the NHL. This is a joke. The NHL point system must go. I understand that they wanted to do away with ties. But this OTL crap is out of hand. Gary Bettman and the rest of these idiots who think losing in OT/Shoot out is worth a point should be shot...

A 'Pointless' Proposal

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
The topic of how to best allot points for wins/losses/etc. in the NHL continues to be discussed. I fully put my support behind the idea put forth by the Random Thinker himself, renowned HockeyBuzzard jsaquella. ([i]the fact he's also my good friend and brother-in-law has little, if anything to do with it. In fact, it probably made me less likely to listen)...
I have seen two different blogs now exhorting the idea I posted in two different random thoughts blogs. It has been praised and ridiculed. I'd like to explain exactly what my rationale is, and why I suggested the points levels in the manner which I described. The System would be: 2 Standings Points for a regulation or OT win 1 Standings Point for a shoot out win 0 ...
I was an advocate of the shootout competition to begin with, just because I thought it would be more fun than it turned out. Think about it: what do you do whenever you have rink time with your friends just to goof around with the puck? You "pull a Michigan" behind the net, point like Owen Nolan, or fling the puck lacrosse style. So that's what I imagined the skills ...
The Overtime/Shootout Loss - Time to Lose the Point and Win The Good Old Days Take a walk with me back to the days of clutching and grabbing, the days of actually being able to clear the crease and the horrid days of ties in hockey. Two teams played 60 minutes, fought hard, left their blood on the ice and end up tied. Overtime. In this in...
Now that we are almost through three seasons of shootouts, I think we'd all agree that the novelty has worn off. The question is: do we want them as part of our game? The Eastern Conference standings are very close, and much of that can be attributed to the 3-point games and shootout wins/losses. We can discuss whether or not overtime losers should get a point at anothe...
I love this time of year. Races for playoff spots and final positioning. Tons of meaningful games. Exciting hockey. But I can't help but be completely annoyed by the current point system and OT/shootout format used by the NHL. I'll be the first to admit that I didn't think twice about it last season, as Buffalo dominated the league and won the President's Trophy, all ...
Welcome to the first live blog of the season by yours truly, but certainly not the last. Tonight's edition is brought to you by green grapes and a game unfortunately not in HD due to Time Warner Rochester's general incompetence. The game starts off with one of my favorite lines Vanek - Roy - Stafford that showed some serious potential when all the participants are healt...

Shootout Alternative

Posted Friday | Comments 0
After competing for a period of time that is about 3.5 hours from preskate through the end of regulation and OT, NHL players are forced to participate in something that is as far from hockey to decide which teams wins. Hockey is the ultimate team sport requiring 6 players on the ice to perform as one to win a game or score a goal. However, the shootout is nothing more th...
Some of the following would obviously require legal work, approval of the NHLPA and other unions and will not be popular with all. So please don't respond with, "The NHLPA would never agree to that"...I know, this is just my own thoughts and what not. First of all, adios to the shootout. It's a gimmick and a joke that the NHL uses it to settle games that can make...
I listen to people complain about the 3 point games and at this time of the year there are more complaints than ever. I hear Gary Bettman explain on his radio show that the races are more exciting than ever and the shootout is great for the game. I say bullshirt! Nobody goes to the game hoping to see a shootout. I feel this is ruining the sport just like the 3 point ...

It's too bad these teams only meet once a season. It was as advertised. These two teams played extremely well, making this game have the feel of a playoff atmosphere. T...

Pens Edge Sabres In Shootout

Buffalo (21-10-2) vs. Pittsburgh (24-10-1) Another big challenge for Buffalo arrived on Saturday night. Sidney Crosby and the Penguins were in town to try and defeat the Sabres. Pittsburgh had Friday night off, while the Sabres were busy beating Toronto. Thomas Vanek was unable to play due to an upper body injury. However, Patrick Kaleta was back in the lineup for the f...

Buffalo Disaster

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
It is absolutely astounding that the Buffalo Sabres were even able to sneak a point out of their usual kryptonite, the Senators. Right from the opening puckdrop, the effort was simply not there from most of the Sabres, the exception being the guy in the blue paint. It took 18 Ottawa shots and 17 1/2 minutes of game time for the Sabres to get a puck through to Pascal LeCl...

This isn't going to be a super long blog...at least it's not intended to be, if it turns out that way then I apologize. Tonight's game against the New Jersey Devils was an interesting one. Yet again Toronto opened the scoring. The Leafs had a lot of trouble doing that throughout the season, but since the deadline it's been all but a guarantee that they'll notch the firs...
The Montreal Canadiens came out with guns a blazing tonight, unfortunately for them NHL games are 60 minutes long. The Sabres didn't look too bad in the first, but had trouble getting pucks to the net. Montreal on the other hand scored just 41 seconds into the game, as Kostitsyn managed to flick the puck over Miller's right pad off of a pass from Plekanec. The Sabre...
This Summer, the National Hockey League has been looking at ways to improve the game. From moving the faceoff circles to eliminating shootouts, NHL officials have targeted a few ideas that could be beneficial to the entire league. After the NHL lockout, the shootout came into effect and many fans were excited about it, as expected. The shootout was something rarely seen...
So what does it take to be a NY Rangers fan? What sets us apart from every other fan in the universe? Anyone can say they are a dedicated fan…its easy to sit on the couch and watch 70+ games a season, and if you have a DVR u can actually watch every minute and every play from the entire season just like I have for the past 13+ years. So what makes that different...
One area that is often a hot discussion is the NHL points system, specifically the awarding of a "loser" point for losing a game in overtime or shootout. Only in the NHL can you get rewarded for losing and too often a team with less wins than another will have more points. Teams should be playing to win but often they play not lose, get at least one point and then hope l...

Shootout needs to go

Posted Friday | Comments 0
I don't hate the shootout that much, I find it just messes with everything. I like it because there is a winner. You can gloat to your friends that your team won in head-to-head match, but in reality it's just a dirty win. It's a skills competition, a cop-out to end the game early and have the crowd go home happy with a win, or content, knowing there team "at least" got a ...

Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DailyNHLGrind Colorado started the year off right in front of a rowdy Pepsi Center crowd. Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DailyNHLGrind Colorado was dominated once again in the shot category on Tuesday night in Carolina.
