Yesterday The Boston Bruin's Brad Marchand received a 5 game suspension for his hit on Sammy Salo. Finally a few of the bad hits that the Bruins make (like 2 out of 1000) are being called. Sure this is great and makes us feel a little better but this needs to continue happening and all their B.S. needs to be called.... regardless of the fact that they are a great team and last years cup champions. Was the 5 games fair or did he deserve more?
Scottie Arniel of the Columbus Blue Jackets was fired over the past week, and this keeps me wondering if we might have a chance to see Sutter snuffed out in the following weeks if we don't see something miraculous happen soon. Firing the coach seems to be a strong trend this year and he must realize he is not immune to this too.
Jarome Iginla notches big number 500 with his goal against the Minnesota Wild.
It is no secret that Iginla is my favorite player in the NHL. He may not be the best player of all time (ahem Gretzky) but his list of accomplishments is phenomenal. Iginla is the player every other player should try be and model himself after. He is an amazing player, will always stick up for his teammates, can fight with the best of them, shows other players and teams the respect they deserve, is a motivator and leader to his team, always interviews well in front of a camera, does what his coach asks of him and participates in charities all the time.
Since being drafted in 1995 Iginla has managed to become the 42nd player to reach the 500 mark and only the 14th having played with only one team. Iginla has notched his 80th game winning goal (only 33 back of the all time leader in this category Jager) with his 500th. Iginla has 10 straight seasons of 30 goals or more and has won the following trophies: the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy twice (2002 & 2004), the Art Ross Trophy in 2002, the Lester B. Pearson Award in 2002, the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2004, the NHL Foundation Player Award in 2004, and the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2009. Jarome has been named to the NHL's First All-Star Team three times (2002, 2008, 2009) and was voted onto the NHL's Second All-Star Team in 2004. As well Iginla has won two Olympic gold medals with Canada (2002 in Salt Lake City and 2010 in Vancouver), was a key component of the 1996 World Junior squad that captured gold in Massachusetts, was the youngest player in the 1997 Men's World Hockey Championships, and played for his country at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey tournament. To add to this in his junior career he won two Memorial Cups, and was
named the WHL Player of the Year and the WHL's first All-Star team after potting 63 goals and 136 points in the 1995-96 campaign.
Although Calgary is a hurting team, it is easy to see why trading Iginla anywhere would be an extremely hard pill to swallow. Iginla isn't the sort of asset that you can trade away and easily replace. I know we need to do something but Iginla proved yet again why he is still an effective player that can help us win.
Recap: Calgary 3 wild 1
In a contest that ended in a very exciting fashion, both teams seemed to be at a stalemate for the first two periods of play. When the third period started we were
treated to Lance Bouma's first NHL goal as he put his team up on the board. Almost six minutes later we saw Iginla put in a lucky goal (pass) that bounced off two skates before deciding to go into the net. In a move that was pre-approved with the league, most of the team came off the bench to celebrate Jarome's 500 goal. Three minutes after Iginla scored Glencross put in the third goal for the flames giving them the insurance and piece of mind they needed. Congrats boys, the five game streak is over, and considering how depleted our lineup is right now I am happy with the outcome.
Game-day Blog: The Devil inside me, Flames vs Devils
I don't know if you have seen the movie yet but despite the warning in the reviews ( 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) I am heading out tonight to go and see the movie anyways. I kind of feel the same way about the flames game tonight, I know we are not looking too good as of late but for some reason I wanted to see this game through. The point tonight? Squeak out a win, no matter what, however we can win! We are playing a non conference team and all we need is points, even an overtime win tonight would be great!
The lineup (mostly due to injuries) should look something like this
Forwards
Curtis Glencross - Olli Jokinen - Jarome Iginla
Lance Bouma - Mikael Backlund - Lee Stempniak
Blake Comeau - Blair Jones - Paul Byron
Tom Kostopoulos - Roman Horak - Tim Jackman
Defense
Jay Bouwmeester - Chris Butler
T.J. Brodie - Cory Sarich
Clay Wilson - Anton Babchuk
Goal
Kiprusoff
Irving
Will the walls come crashing down around us, or will we squeak out a win and keep trying to get into a playoff spot? I know if we were Edmonton the big plan would be fail and get ourselves another #1 pick.... Thank god for Pride! Should we fail for Nail? or keep our pride and try and see this thing through?
Jamie Desrochers - Covering Flames Hockey in Ontario
who the hell is clay wilson?
He is a 28 year old that has spent since 2007 between Blue Jackets, Thrashers, Panthers and Flames. he has only played 33 games or so in the NHL so I guess he is a prospect (taking the long maturing road). Clay is a 6' 195lb Defenseman.Obviously he hasn't ever impressed too much hence 27 and on the AHL affiliate.Desperate times call for desperate measures.. we are down 8 guys Alex Tanguay, Mark Giordano, David Moss, Derek Smith, Henrik Karlsson, Brett Carson, Matt Stajan, Scott Hannan
Blair Jones looked ok... I thought Byron had some flashes...
Is there an update on any of the injuries?
T.J. Brodie continues to impress me! I think you are looking at one of our up and coming top 4 D. Injures,.... :-S. Oh and Morrison is also injuted... The update is that Morrison is day to day and should be back vs Anaheim and Gio has been staking with team but isn't being rushed back in I am guessing another week or so for him.
Did you see Parise crying about the check from Brodie at the end of the game? Called him and AHL player trying to make a name for himself... lol... Keep your head up coming around the net Zach!
It's too bad because in some ways I was hoping we would try and land us a Parise but seeing that makes me certainly think twice about that.... Thank god some of the rookies are stepping up! Also of note Vetter is back :-)
