Today Calgary finally managed to land defenceman Anton Babchuk
back in a 2 year contract worth $2.5 million per year. It is believed that this negotiation was stalled until now because Calgary was trying to keep Cap room for Brad Richards. Saturday night news spread of New York Rangers signing brad Richards ending hopes that Calgary's reported 65 million dollar offer might stick. Signing Babchuk was a huge positive coming off a rather uneventful UFA period which saw former Flame Adam Pardy picked up by the Dallas stars and was preceded by the loss of Arguably their best defenceman Robyn Regehr. Babchuk posted great number last season with 11 Goals, 24 Assists and a plus 14 rating which was the best +/- on the entire team.
I for one am glad to see we finally purged ourselves of Ales Kotalik, and in the process managed to free up some salary for the first time in awhile. Anton Babchuck was a much needed piece for the flames in a vary sparse UFA market this year. Question being how do we move forward? We need more help on the back end so what happens now? Do we bring up some of our prospects and tell them sink or swim? Do we trade and try to land ourselves A Stamkos ? and if we were to do so could we even afford what it would cost in prospects? The upside of this is a 21 year old that is on his upswing, maybe at the same time we find a dance partner for Langkow?
I have felt J Bo has been overpaid for what he does but now that we have a severely crippled back end we couldn't possibly trade him could we?
Players locked in with no trade clauses, our second highest paid forward coming off an injury, broken pieces from other teams like Hagman and overpaid players like J BO.
I am gonna pray we can do the best that we can with what we have, and that Feaster can work some more magic to see another 1 or two of the bad contracts disappear.
Let me know what you think we can do ?
