So far, the prospect’s tournament has been a breath of fresh air, for the most part. Detroit went 2-0-1 in 3 games, scoring 17 goals. A healthy dose for sure. There is, however, and “I told you so” moment for me here. Injuries. Alec Regula was taken out of last night’s game in the first period with a concussion.
There was no penalty on the play, it looked like a high hit but my streaming clarity was a bit off. I’m not even sure who on Toronto hit him. In the regular season, there would most likely have been a penalty and possibly supplemental. All that aside, I am hoping Regula will be ok soon. A concussion can derail an entire season, and we haven’t even started main camp.
I talked about this in a former post.

These kids have management and scouts staring them down like steer at a county fair. They want to make an impression. Taking out a 6’4” defenseman certainly is eye catching, and game impacting. These kids want a job and you have a limited amount of time to make an impression. And someone gets hurt.
I didn’t like the hit, I thought the refs missed a call, but I’m more worried about a kid who could be really hurt right now. I suffer from a closed head injury. Until I did, I never knew what really happens. It’s a nightmare. I lost my job, and every day for the past 3 plus years is just constant pain. I hate it, and now I hate seeing it happen.
There is a bias here, of course. I’m a Detroit fan. I suffer from post concussion and PTSD. If I were a Leaf’s fan, I don’t know if I’d give it a second thought. “It’s part of the game”, etc. But, it was unnecessary. If these kids have to kill themselves in pre season games the refs need to be aware of protocol and headshot liability. It was missed, and life goes on for most of us. Let’s hope Alec Regula can move quickly on too.
Concussions can also end careers in a hurry. Regula played great with Seider. Hope he'll be ok.
Yeah they can. Thanks for reading, Gordie. I didn’t see him yesterday so i’m Hoping it is just precautionary
