In the home opener at Little Caesars Arena, Trevor Daley went down in the first period with an injury. I expect a fairly regular carousel of blue line ailments this year, in keeping with what the team dealt with last year. My assumption was that Madison Bowey will get his chance to play, as he’s currently a healthy scratch. And then Yzerman made a trade.

We sent David Pope to Edmonton for Alex Biega. A right handed D who can play a tough, gritty game. Which Madison Bowey can also play. This is why I am scratching my head.

In the end, this could be nothing. Bowey is with the big club, in part, because we would have to put him on waivers to get to the AHL. I’m not sure about Biega at this point. If another D man is joining the big club, something is definitely strange. The easiest speculation is a trade, and the most fun to dwell on.

Is Bowey being held out to keep him healthy for a trade? The two names I immediately think of are Jesse Pujuljarvi and Josh Ho Sang. I’m not eager to take on either player, necessarily, but I could potentially see Bowey being someone Ken Holland or Lou Lamarillo would want as part of a deal.

For now, we’ll see. There is no rumor to back up what I’m wondering, and no reason to think the recent trade has anything to do with Bowey. It’s just strange, he can skate well and had a decent pre season. I guess we’ll find out soon.
