Depth isn't all that Michael Peca will provide the Blue Jackets, and what a good thing it is.

It was reported tonight by the Columbus Dispatch and the NY Daily News that Peca's agent, Don Meehan, and Columbus GM Scott Howson are finalizing a one-year contract. Terms are not immediately available.

The official annoucement is expected Wednesday morning.

Peca's remarks last week to the Dispatch expressed great interest in playing for the Jackets, and high praise for Ken Hitchcock and Scott Howson, who was the assistant GM in Edmonton when the Oilers went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2005-06.

Tonight, he spoke of a great locker room in Columbus, with a few familiar faces and a former housemate in Jason Chimera.

"We had a deal in place (with the Rangers) and their general manager hasn't shown the commitment to get anything done," Peca said. "And now I'm getting pretty excited to play for Ken Hitchcock and the Blue Jackets."

Where will he play? This remains to be seen. He could easily slide in and play #2 center between Fredrik Modin and Nikolai Zherdev, provided a young player doesn't step up in camp and steal the spot. If that happens, he would also be a great fit on his buddy Jason Chimera's checking line between him and the gritty Dan Fritsche.

A good night for Jackets fans indeed, more to come.

Welcome to Columbus, Mr. Peca, we're glad to have you on board.

A much needed snag for Columbus. I don't think he'd get as much responsibility as he will in Columbus. Expect an 'A' on his chest, if not this season, next season (Providing he plays well and re-signs. I don't think he wants to go through this process again.)

I don't think he'd get as much responsibility with the Rangers that is.

I agree with CanesRallyCry - he wouldn't get as much responsibility with the Rangers. The question is can he hadle more responsibility than a 3rd line center? I have to be honest, as a Ranger fan I was torn on about MP signing, and although I would not have mind it, I am ok with Rangers passing on Peca. I think whatever cap room we have left, we should focus on getting some defensive help if possible.

I'm happy with this signing. Definately an upgrade from Svitov and he was only a little more expensive. We needed another great leader on this squad.

What you don't realize is that Peca will be traded at the deadline for prospects/picks. Smart move by Columbus.

Hey Rangers fans, what is your cap situation right now? Just curious. I've heard some people saying you are over and still only have 11 forwards signed.

I think the Rangers will be over if Shanny makes all of his money through the bonuses. If he doesn't do good this year or barely plays they should be ok by like .003 of a million. They are below the cap b/c the sent Kasparaitis which freed up 3 million.

I agree a much needed aquisition by the Jackets. I think his leadership will be invaluable this year and he will act as a role model for Nash as Hitch would like to see him (Nash) become more of a 2 way player like Modano.
