It's about time that the Flyers finally play another game, eh? Tonight, the Flyers will play their first game after the All-Star break as they take on the Florida Panthers. The last game for the Flyers was last Wednesday when they defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 5-3. Tonight's game against the Panthers should be a very interesting game, because these two teams faced off against each other on the 16th of January, just 11 games ago. In the last meeting, the Flyers won that game in the shootout, 3-2.
It will be very interesting to see how Marty Biron plays tonight. The reason why is that Marty hasn't played since the 15th of January, when he lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1. Obviously, Marty has had plenty of practice between the 15th and today, but he hasn't played in an actual game in a while. Don't be surprised if Marty is rusty early in this game tonight because of the long layoff. After the first period or so, I do think Marty will be fine.
One of the keys for the Flyers will be to stop David Booth, but more importantly the offensive d-men duo of Jay Bouwmeester and Bryan Mccabe. J-Bo is already in the 10 goal mark, while McCabe is right near that mark. These two love jumping into the plays, and I think you can exploit them a bit if the puck comes back to you and you can create a rush.
Next, the Flyers need to score early on to gain confidence. You can say this going into every single game, but this is especially important for tonight. Peter DeBoer is a defensive type of coach that preaches defense first, then offense, and if you can get a couple goals early, you can beat the Panthers. Back in the last meeting, the Flyers scored two first period goals against the Panthers and that helped them get a victory. Get on the scoreboard early, and the Flyers can win this game.
Finally, the Flyers need to get the puck to the net on Tomas Vokoun. If the Flyers can do so, then the goals will come, because Vokoun has not played that great this season. We all know that the key to scoring goals is getting the puck to the net, but against a shaky goaltender in Vokoun, the Flyers can score some goals against him. However, the Panthers have a really good defense with J-Bo, McCabe, Keith Ballard, Nick Boynton, and Karlis Skrastins, so you have to be able get pucks to the net against that solid defense.
Last five games for Flyers:
