It's been confirmed by David Pollak that Rob Blake has agreed to a one year contract to return to the Sharks for the price of $3.5 mill.

Marcel Goc may be out the door, but Rob Blake is coming back for a second season with the Sharks.

The team signed the 39-year-old defenseman to a one-year deal that will pay him $3.5 million next season, according to a team source. Blake would have become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday.

This is the perfect contract to be giving to Blake. Last season, he was extremely overpaid, but I guess that's what it took to get him in the door. This year, with what he's agreed to, we can see that Blake understands what SJ offers, and has taken a discount to stay with the team.

Now, some are saying that this contract is too expensive, but I don't agree. The market has become extremely overinflated with players like Brian Campbell ($7.14 mill) and Jeff Finger ($3.5 mill) received last Free agency. Compare the stats of those 3 players, and you will see that this is actually a pretty sweet deal. If Blake has a similar season to last year, his contract will be well worth it. And hopefully, he won't have another freak injury, and will be able to play for the entire year.

And aside from an inflated market, we are paying for experience. A veteran player to help mentor the younger guys like Vlassic, Ehrhoff (if he sticks around), Joslin, and Moore (both of which should get shots on the roster). This is a key component to why he was kept on the team, and another reason why I don't mind seeing DW dish out some money to keep him here.
