Pumped for the Atlantic!

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
We got a taste of the 8 game series last year, no matter what division your team is in. I know that every time we played the Devils, Flyers, Islanders and Pittsburgh, everything about the game was intense; the fans, the players.. just the overall mood in the games. This off season, there have been many significant changes to the teams in our division.. Let's start off w...
All the hype for winger Hugh Jessiman in training camp this year was unwarranted. He hadn’t shown anything in two years of minor league hockey to make anyone believe he could have made the Rangers this year. In the first two preseason games Jessiman was invisible and I don’t know how that’s possible for a guy with a 6’6”, 230 pound frame. The most emb...

Blueshirts Explode

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
Its been a tale of two seasons for the Rangers. Their home record stands at 8-2 while they are still winless on the road at 0-5-1. Tonight was another example of a dominant home performance as the Rangers mustered 39 shots in a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The team is now 1-1 head to head, the other game ending in a 1-0 Penguin's victory. Lots of good highligh...
Three years removed from the NHL lockout and the young talent continues to look better and better with every drop of the puck. The 2007 Young Stars Game was a joke, plain and simple. It was boys, not men, floating around the ice and cherry picking at the oppositions blue line looking for a breakaway. Yawn. Quite a different scene displayed by the young talent selecte...
Red Bull Gives You Wings Two men have received the majority of the blame for the ineptitude of the 2008-09 Rangers offense. After all, Chris Drury and Scott Gomez do eat up over 14 million dollars of the Rangers cap space, and their production has been far from comparable with othe...
First, and foremost, please do not judge this article as coming from the opinion of an Islanders fan. I am as unbiased as humanly possible in this aspect, and I truly tell it how it is. It is for this reason that I felt obligated to put together a little piece on the Rangers, and how the toughest part for them, and their management, actually begins now. Granted, they just ...
It is very difficult to predict how a team will perform during a season. I think this holds true for the New York Rangers. They were able to rid themselves of under-achieving Scott Gomez and were able to pick up Marian Gaborik and Chris Higgins which were two great moves for the team. These were good acquisitions but the signing of Donald Brashear for $1.4 million ...
Why is Zherdev looking for more money. $3.25 million is enough for an enigmatic forward who plays his hardest for about 1/4 of the games. He should put up with the money the money the Rangers qualified him at. If he refuses to sign for the $3.25 million I and the Rangers won't be expecting him back in Broadway Blue. I'll keep you posted as the Rangers RFA situation slowly ...

Where do Rangers go from here?

Posted Wednesday | Comments 1
We are now one full week into free agency and I thought it was a good time to take a look at where the Rangers are at as a team and in what directions they may look to further improve the team. To date, the Rangers have traded high-priced Center Scott Gomez to the Canadiens in a six player deal that landed the Rangers Forward Christopher Higgins and defense prospect Ryan M...
This is my first in-depth look at the cap...so bear with me. As of today, the cap numbers being supplied from NHLSCAP.com state that the Rangers have about $2.9 million left for the 2009-2010 season. There are a few updates to make to that number and a few items left on Slat's "to-do" list that will have impact. Here's where I think we are... First, the additions.....

Snake Eyes

I still believe the Rangers are in for another major move. Sather is just lying in the tall grass waiting to strike. Slithering around. Waiting for other deals to fall apart. From what I've read, the hang-up with Dubinsky's deal seems to be term NOT money. Why would they be afraid to give him a 3 or 4 year deal? Shouldn't he be a building block? Despite the cap issues, I ...

So where do we stand? Recap: Here is the list of guys we picked up this offseason who will likely start Donald Brasher Marian Gaborik Chris Higgins Ales Kotalik Enver Lisin Vi...

Down to 34 and Dubinsky

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
Today the Rangers trimmed their roster down to 34 and competition for the last few spots are going to get tougher. The Rangers sent 15 players to the AHL Wolf Pack team including Nigel Williams, Miika Wikman, Mike Sauer, Brodie Dupont and Sam Kllassen. They also sent five junior players to their junior teams. Five other players (Arnason, Byers, Locke, Owens and Rissmiller...
Call me confused. Don’t get me wrong; I am stoked that the Rangers and Glen Sather finally came to their senses and gave Dubinsky enough money to entice him to re-sign. The problem I have is with the money they gave him, especially if the reports I have read are true. We know that pressure had been building on Dubinsky’s side to get the player into camp. John Tortor...
Three games into the new season and the Rangers find themselves 2 – 1 – 0 heading into a big early season match-up with the team that knocked us out of last years postseason. I will be watching intently to see how the new Rangers players and the Torts’ style of play compare to the offensive juggernaut that is the Capitals. In last year’s playoffs, the Capitals domi...
Re-visiting a question previously mentioned on Rangers’ posts, would it behoove the Rangers to bring back veteran, play-making Center Michael Nylander? According to Steve Hindle, the Capitals blogger on Hockeybuzz, the team has place Nylander on waivers. This move in and of itself is more complicated than it would seem. Because of Nylander’s No Movement Clause (NMC)...
Great win this afternoon at the TD Banknorth Garden by the Rangers. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a dominating performance but it was solid. Boston controlled the play for stretches but all-in-all the Rangers did a good job of making sure a Bruins team missing key players came up on the short end of the stick. Lundqvist was great today. He made some great saves foll...

Too Good to Be True

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
I will not talk about last night. For me, that “game” didn’t ever happen. I have completely wiped that garbage from my mind. Instead I’m going to talk about some of the rumors that have been reported or repeated on this site. The first is the alleged request by the Ales Kotalik camp that he be traded or allowed to go to Europe. Beautiful!! Since he has a NMC ge...
For the third time this season (and this month) the New York Rangers will clash with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In their first two meetings (4-3 OT win Leafs / 2-1 win Rangers), each have conquered the other on the road. Toronto will look to avoid recent history repeating by earning the victory in this match-up at home. Toronto has scored just 7 goals in their last 5 gam...

Rangers Youth Being Served

Posted Sunday | Comments 6
Many Rangers fans have been critical of coach Tortorella in the past. We've complained of his constant line changes, his demeanor towards some of the young talent and the way in which the team always seems to start games off slowly. I would argue though that Torts has been spot on since the beginning. Yes, I would admit he has made mistakes, like any coach will. But whe...

Gut Check Time for Rangers

Posted Monday | Comments 0
The New York Rangers have entered into unfamiliar territory after dropping their 4th game in a row. During a time that was supposed to be one where the Rangers thrived after getting 4 regulars back into the lineup, they have instead played the inconsistent hockey that has plagued them the past few seasons. It's too quick to jump to conclusions and say that this team is the...
Ask any Rangers fan about the core of the team, present and future, and the answer will always begin the same way. “Callahan and Dubinsky.” Their names, always juxtaposed, are synonymous with change, hope and any other unachievable ideal promised by the POTUS. But political humor aside, these two players represent the direction this franchise has wanted to take ever si...

Top Dog

As the start of a new season approaches and the 23 best players on each team battle to secure roster spots, hockey discussion is dominated by projected line combinations. There is open season on any player for any spot, from the #1 defenseman, to the 4th line right wing, to the healthy scratch. But for the New York Rangers, what really matters is the top forward line. ...

Kill 'Em All

3 games + 5 goals = No wins. It seems simple enough: once again the Rangers have scoring issues. The reason is no longer lack of talent up front, instead the cause is far more painful because it is self-inflicted, not Sather-inflicted. The Rangers should be winning games. They outscore opponents at a 1.25:1 ratio at even strength. Unfortunately, they have spent 9:40 per ga...
60 minutes in a game. 12 minutes 29 seconds shorthanded. [img:right]http://ipadvideo.thescore.com/source/10182011_LUNDQVIST_WITH_BROADWAY_HAT_thumbM.jpg [/img]And if Henrik Lundqvist didn't turn into the Great Wall of China last night in Vancouver, it would have been 4 losses to open the Rangers' season. Luckily, the King was focused all night, determined to earn t...
What did Slats see that Lou didn't? This guy was at Devil's camp and couldn't crack their lineup. Really? Have you watched the Devil's transition game? Surely they could use another cheap puck moving d-man. Given McDonagh's rapidly expanding offensive prowess and Del Zotto's return to form (well.....close enough) was it really necessary to burn $900k on this guy? Who si...
The winning streak was going to end. They all do, just don't tell that to the red hot Bruins. But for the Rangers, this loss was a long time coming. In fact, it is shocking that the club was able to go on such a run despite sitting dead last in the league in shots on goal. "You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take," said Wayne Gretzky, in one of his glorious mathem...

How Columbus Can Contend

Posted Sunday | Comments 1
I’m sure the first question many of you are asking yourselves is why I, a passionate Rangers fan, am writing a blog on MYHB about the Columbus Blue Jackets. In my nearly four years of contributions on this site I can only think of one time I wrote about a team or a player of another team that was in no way related to the Rangers. So why start now? I have a couple of rati...
Four centre's MacTavish should target When I look at the Oilers roster and within their system they have some weaknesses. They need someone who can play a solid 2 way game for more than a limited minute role. They need someone big as the current Oilers have limited size. They need someone that will initiate contact. They need someone to be able to wins face off in their...
