With the New Jersey devils getting Paul Martin signed to a 3 year, $11.5 million deal this week, the bar continues to be set for the status of next years free agent defenseman. For Sabres fans, that means, what will become of Brian Campbell?

Campbell is coming off a great 2006-07, where he had 48 points and set career highs for goals. After seeing the kind of deals defenseman such as Cory Sarich and Andy Sutton got during this years offseason, it is safe to say Campbell may indeed approach a big time payday if he makes it to July 1, 2008.

But what would be a good early offer for GM Darcy Regier to make and take a proactive stance. Seeing Martins deal at a glance (3 mil, 4, 4.5), says that a deal in this ballpark should be enough to keep Campbell off the market. Something in the range of 4 yrs, 16 mil perhaps?

But we have seen the past two off-seasons that the bar just gets higher as teams decide to start spending. So what is the right deal for Brian Campbell hockey fans?

I give you guys the floor...but before I do, could we be seeing the end of the Ed Belfour area in the NHL?

The much maligned veteran netminder looks like he could be on his way overseas to Sweden according to a Swedish web site.

According to reports, Leksand of the Swedish Premier Division has already begun contract talks with the 42 year-old netminder, a fact that GM Mikael Lundstrom would not comment on, but would not deny.

Eddie has certainly been good for a good laugh or two the past few seasons, but was solid as a backup in Florida last season. Im sure we all as fans of Hockeybuzz wish him the best.

I was hoping Belfour would go to Ottawa to back up Emery.

A couple of questions. Is Campbell an rfa or ufa? Because I'm sure that other teams will offer him far more than the Sabres will..And do you guys think that Darcy has changed his ways and will work harder to signing and rewarding his own guys to extensions?

I believe 16 million for 4 years is reasonable for Campbell. Higher would be a mistake however. Ryan Miller's deal looms out there shortly and so will Stafford's. The big four in Buffalo for the next five years will be Vanek, Roy, Stafford and Miller. There won't be room for many other players at, or around 4 million per.I believe Darcy has learned his lesson. However, it came far too late.

Great points Capt. Every time a decent d-man gets signed. Soupy's next deal gets richer. Sign him now $ave down the road.
