There's a lot of hub-bub recently about the new RBK sweaters. And frankly, I think this could well be the darkest Jersey era in Pro Sports since the Chicago White Sox wore pajama tops and shorts....
However, one thing has struck me recently -- why do we still force one team to always wear white? I mean, when my Blues are playing, say, the Chicago Blackhawks, is there really a good reason that the Blues in their Blue sweaters can't face the Blackhawks in their red sweaters?
I certainly can't think of any.
Sales show that a team's "colored" sweater out-sells the white ones. So why not give the teams more of an opportunity to show them off? Here's an easy way to do it...
All Teams wear colored sweaters
More colorful viewing, and you can show off those sweaters to thousands of potential jersey buyers. The 12 remaining people in North America with black-and-white TVs will just have to cope.
In the case of a color conflict the home team shall wear another color.
Eventually, the Devils are going to have to play the Senators. Both wear red. So to keep the home team from having to travel with two sets of gear (the very reason we went to "darks-at-home" ), the home team has the burden of switching to white. In addition, fans at the game get a little variety. Some nights they wear white, some nights they wear dark.
For that matter team wouldn't even necessarily have to have a white sweater -- Boston could have a yellow and black, Philadelphia could have an orange and black. Or teams could have multiple colors, and wear whatever non-conflicting sweater they choose. Vancouver could have a white, blue, green, orange, yellow, brown, black and fuschia sweater, each with the words "YOU'RE WATCHING THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS" right above the logo.....
Holy mackerel, those are bad... phew......
Anyway, you get a little variety and marketability with no cost increase. That's the sort of thing that makes Mr. Bettman smile.

I know some people who are colour-blind who can't distinguish between colours like red and blue on the ice at once (like the All-star games a few years back)

BF, if two teams have the same colour, I suggest that the team that was ahead in the standings the previous year be allowed to wear that colour! That way, the Sens can wear the red all next year!!
