The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone, and as expected, Brian Campbell is no longer a Buffalo Sabre. An instant analysis on the deal:
For Buffalo:
While losing one of the better offensive defensemen in the game, Buffalo adds some much needed size and grit with the addition of winger Steve Bernier. Bernier, at 6'2 225, instantly becomes one of the Sabres biggest forwards and adds some muscle and edge to compliment Paul Gaustad, Pat Kaleta and Daniel Paille. Bernier loves to take the body and has a good scoring touch. He could blossom into a consistent 20 goal scorer.
The 1st round pick in 2008 is another good asset to have due to the strength of this years upcoming draft. 2 picks in the mid to late teens lets Buffalo grab 2 good solid players or use the picks to possibly make a move into the Top 10.
Also, the deal will allow Buffalo to use different defenseman in more offensive situations. The Campbell trade should cue the assent of Andrej Sekera to the NHL roster. Sekera is a solid defensive player with a good head for the offensive game. He has better then average skating ability and a good shot and should be able to produce at a 40 point tilt. It also allows Dmitri Kalinin to be used more on the PP, where his skills are very useful.
For San Jose: San Jose gets the best offensive defenseman on the market and their first true PP quarterback in their history. Campbell should really help an already strong PP with Joe Thornton, Jonathan Cheechoo and Patrick Marleau. He also wont kill you in your own end and could form a talented pairing with any of the Sharks current D-men.
Overall, San Jose does win the trade right now, but long term benefits will all depend on Campbells future. if San Jose can get him signed long term, its a very good deal for them. if he does not, Buffalo could end up with a possible steal depending on the use of the draft pick
I like your mention of Sekera. I wouldn't mind seeing him called up. I really don't know much about Bernier, so for me anyway the verdict is out. One thing I am worried about is how the 'd' is going to look. While listening to WGR Regier did mention Teppo might be coming back. He said we will know by March 20. If we make the playoffs this might be a nice addition. I also wanted to mention something a little off topic. What were the Florida Panthers doing today acquiring Kilgore and Belak? Is this just them filling roster spots? I know they have been devastated by injuries, but them giving up draft picks for these guys is kind of questionable. PS Buffalo Fans: Don't boo Campbell when he comes back. lol
i like the deal to start but they should have waited longer and gotten more i like bernier though put him on the vanek line and let them work
Bernier seems like another Kotalik. Lets hope he has a little more intensity. Sounds like he does as he was leading the Sharks in hits by a wide margin!
Don't expect much intensity... sorry.
I like the upside. Pretty pleased with the trade. Don't like Darcy's day over all. No real help for this year and no selling to prepare for next.
Hey 7: You have to have intensity somewhat in order to hit as much as Bernier does!
