All fans have a certain player or players that they gravitate to. Guys that they just admire for some reason or another, or just have to watch on TV whenever they get the chance.
Mount Rushmore in South Dakota is a place where four of America's greatest leaders are immortalized. But if presidents can have their own mountain, why cant hockey players?
Who is on your "Mount Rushmore" of hockey? The four guys (past or present) that you just cant get enough of?
Heres mine:
Wayne Gretzky: The obvious choice for possibly a good majority of the site. He is quite simply the Great One. While im too young to remember the Oiler days, watching him as a King and a Ranger was enough to make him the great one to people my age as well.
Pat Lafontaine: Growing up in Buffalo, there was simply no better player and person in the community then Pat Lafontaine. He would stop and sign anything for anybody and was always a true professional on and off the ice. One of the worst days of my life as a young kid was losing my autographed Lafontaine card.
Mats Sundin: Yes, there is a Leaf on my Mount Rushmore. While I, and possibly 95% of Leaf Nation questioned his decision to not waive his NTC, Sundin proved that there may not be a more loyal player on the planet then Sundin. A hard working player on the ice, gifted with great hands and vision, Sundin has always been the reason why I cannot despise the Leafs.
Finally, the final member of my Mount Rushmore:
Alexander Ovechkin: I have never done this before in my life, but when Ovechkin scored on a breakaway against the Sabres last Wednesday, I found myself inside the HSBC Arena, clapping for a member of the opposing team. Ovechkins skill and pure love for the game makes him one of the more likeable players in the game today.
Outside of the obvious-Howe, Gretzky, Lemieux and Orr-I'd go with Orr, Phil Esposito, Bobby Clarke and Jeremy Roenick
Patrick Roy, Dave Schultz, Paul Coffey - goalie, goon and grace.
For me - Clarkie, Parent, Gretzky and Orr
I'll locate myself in age and location when i say i'd put pat lafontaine up there as well, then gretz, orr, and howe.
Nice write up Capt!Lafontaine, AO, I have to admit I loved watching Dom Hasek when he was on top, and finally, Yzerman...just love the passion the guy showed every night!
Danny Gare, Rob Ray, Lafontaine and Gilbert Perreault. Gare toughness and goal scoring, Ray for etching out career with THAT talent, Lafontaine for class and Perreault for getting the franchise off and running and his P.R. work(his Elvis songs after home games are hilarious)
