Palin to Drop Puck

Posted 9:50 PM ET | Comments 18
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that Republican Vice President candidate Sarah Palin will drop the puck at the home opener Saturday night again the New York Rangers. Ed Snider had this to say, “Because of the tremendous amount of publicity she has brought to our sport, we invited the most popular hockey mom in North America to our home opener to help us get our season started." I do no think Palin did anything for the sport at all. I believe someday I may be a hockey mom, and I am excited for that. To have her as the "spokesperson" for hockey moms is down right embarrassing.

The Flyers also had their own hockey mom contest inspired by Palin. The contest involved having hockey moms in the philadelphia area send in pictures showing their Flyers pride with a sign. I thought the contest was a cute idea.

I believe the Flyers are making a bad decision. I have already heard from a friend on facebook that there have been a ridiculous amount of negative feedback being called in the the Flyers. I really do not think this will go over well. Regardless of whether you support Palin or not, politics are something people believe very strongly in. Anyone who does not like Palin will have ill feelings about this. I am predicting booing to the level of a Sidney Crosby appearance at Saturdays game.

I can almost hear the booing now. Although I really try to not behave like the stereotypical "philly fan". I cannot guarentee I won't be booing. I am sooooo disappointed by this decision.

No doubt, go Sarah! But why in the world does this really matter? Politicians and celebrities drop the puck and throw the opening pitch ALL THE TIME! Especially Presidents and Vice-Presidents in office or running for that office. How about not making a big deal about it by . . . NOT making a big deal about it!

Why? Maverick? So I have to wait for that nonsense to occur before I can watch some season hockey? Why couldn't they have her stop by the igloo instead? Philly democrats outnumber republicans 5:1. Nephew. What??

Worst thing to happen in Philadelphia Hockey History. What an embarrassement. Should've stopped in that junk city we all call Pittsburgh. They love you and your psychotic evangelical views.

If I were actually fortunate enough to attend this game (for the game, not Brainless, I meant Palin) and she even HINTED at talking politics... I'd pray that someone throws a dirty water hot dog and gets her right in the kisser with it.

Nephew23, it's not unusual for a politician to do this sort of thing when they're in office not in the middle of a campaign. If McCain/Palin lose the election and Palin becomes even more a figure of ridicule then the NHL will once again have aligned themselves with a loser oddball in the US. How do they always manage to do this?

Nice! I like a candidate who is not a socialist.

Regardless of the INTENT...Perception will always win out. think corporate america and big business...but hey at least she might know some of the russian since she can see them where she lives!!!

if a candidate has a hockey connection, i don't think it's so bad. if this were a red state it would not be an issue, but ed knows it could be in this politically entrenched area. the vitriol against palin however, is very revealing.

But Ranger fans prefer the fascist and evangelical candidate?

phillyfan, I prefer the candidate that will lower corporate taxes, and not assist in record unemployment and entitlement spending.

i would be willing to put money on the fact that had it been obama dropping the puck, half of you whiners wouldnt be posting. enough. was it a wise choice to make it a politician? maybe not, but people are really starting to blow this whole thing wayyyyy out of proportion. lets just be happy that everything starts in a few days!
