Farm Boy Theory

Posted 3:13 AM ET | Comments 22
"You don't have to worry about that. He's not going down there to get confidence. But he's an awesome kid. He's a farm kid, and you know clearly what direction he's going.”

-- Darryl Sutter’s comments regarding TJ Brodie and his demotion to the AHL.

The question I pose is this: What is it that makes farm kids such good hockey players? Are they seemingly tougher from growing up on a farm, or has all the time herding cattle and riding horseback made their hockey sense super innate? Does Sutter know every farmer in the world? Is he possibly stereotyping ALL farm kids?

Any follower of the team would know that this has been common theme with the Flames ever since Sutter took over the team. Now I understand that his reasoning behind getting “Western Canadian boys” or “farm kids” playing for this team is because he figures they will enjoy playing in Calgary -- being that it’s close to home and/or has a lot of Cowboy flare to it.

The thing that makes me fume is that Sutter has stuck with this trend despite having little to no success the last FIVE seasons. Sure, they have made the playoffs five of the last six seasons, but take away the 04’ run and what do you have? The answer is four first round exits and a missed playoff berth coupled with fans slowly becoming disgruntled at the make-up of this team.

Sure, back when Sutter showed up in the earlier part of the decade Calgary wasn’t exactly a ‘hot-spot’ for players to play. But, and I give Sutter credit for this, times have changed and players seem to not hate coming to Calgary now. Maybe it’s time that Sutter steers away from the Rodeo finalists and goes after talented hockey players with skill and actually play making ability.

How many players can you name, besides goalies, which have come to Calgary, been outside the Sutter mould, and made a significant impact on this team in the last seven years? I’ll give you a head start: Cammalleri and Tanguay the first time around. These are two players that posses an un-canning amount of offensive skill, yet we decide to let Cammy leave despite having a career year playing alongside Jarome.

My point is, and yes I do have a point, is that the league is better fit for the Cammalleri type player and less for the grinding farm boy. Grinding farm boys work really hard but when it comes to scoring goals, it seems that skill is able to do that on a more consistent basis.

I just want to see a change -- a change in mindset and a change in direction. Sure the Flames are 3-2, but how long can they keep it up scoring 1.8 goals per game? Will Kipper have to set a ridiculous shutout record for the Flames to even have a faint whisper of making the playoffs?

It’s not good when fans are shocked to see their own team score a goal. And it’s really sad when you would almost rather want to watch an Oiler’s game than a Flames game because you know something will happen.

Back to Brodie, and the funny thing about it all is that didn’t play like your average farm boy. He played with some offensive flare and had some excitement – something this team lacks a lot of.

And it’s not that I disagree with the demotion, as I realize players need time to mature, it’s that I disagree with what they kept or picked up in his stead. Why pick up Mikkleson? Why keep Staios? Despite Sarich’s play of late, why is he still here? And for that matter why pick up Morrison when you had the opportunity to let Backlund break out of his shell? Why have not one but two tough guys on your team? I could go on, but I digress.

As you can tell the 1-0 shutout victory over the Preds didn’t exactly prove to me that the Flames are better than they are. What if it had been the other way around? A lot of Flames fans would have a different outlook if the team had been shutout for the third time in its first five games – which was a very near reality.

The same problems are plaguing this team over and over again (Eight goals in five games). Some players may different, but one thing remains constant: the man upstairs.

i did not read this whole thing but the Farm Boy typically refers to people that actually know what hard work is from being on a farm. They typically don't have the union entitlement attitude and work hard to move their way up not just expect things to be handed to them because they show talent every now and then.

and thats great. but all im saying is that most of these dont necessarily know how to score goals all the time. And Calgary desperately needs goal scoring.

I'd be careful stereotyping the farmboys. He may not have been a farmboy (i dont know) but growing up in Regina can't be far off, look at Ryan Getzlaf!

Defensively, with Kipper we are solid. I say lets get in the Spezza war. Lets part with White, Pelach, Stajan or Hagman, give a 2nd rounder. We need a major core adjustment

Brodie was born in a small town in Ontario so he definitely could have been a farm boy, and if Sutter says he is, Im sure it is correct. And yes with Kipper he gives the Flames a chance to win every night but eventually they need to score goals. Spezza would help but i think its unrealistic

You are so off..... to say the Flames have had little or no success in the last 5 years is ridiculous, we made the playoffs 4 times and won the division once. It is difficult to make the playoffs in the west as opposed to the east (this is well know no further explanation required). We have played in some tough series and would have beat Chicago in 09 were it not for injuries.... I completely agree with Indiana Sabres Fan....

how can you knock Sarich he has played amazing so far, look at some of the goals scored against the Flames, in particular the third goal in the Florida game Brodie was completely at fault, kid does not know defense yet.... and with the offense we have we cannot afford to give the other team goals....
October 21, 2010 2:34 PM ET | Delete
And you knock the Morrison signing, seriously?????? $725 000 and he leads our team in scoring and that's a negative..... figure it out Newman, Backlund has to win a top 6 job by outplaying the centres on this team... I do not want to see a culture of entitlement come to calgary

Sorry newman, my poor syntax made my point unclear. I meant whether Getz was a farmboy or not, coming from Sask. and all.
October 21, 2010 3:33 PM ET | Delete
Is that what you call success? Not making it past the first round. The regluar seaosn doesn't mean anything. Win the division or not success will always be determined by playoffs success and the Flames have had none in the last five years. And yes im knocking the Morrison signing. Its five games in dude, look at the long term. He is not needed. Arent u tired of seeing Sutter sign old guys and demote the young guys? IT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR!!!
October 21, 2010 3:35 PM ET | Delete
And Sarich is overpaid. Fine he has played well in the last two games but for $3.6 million I would rather have a higher skilled forward..not a No. 6 defenceman. The Flames allotment of money is ridiculous. Just look at some of their signings.

as for Indiana: I have no idea what your even try to say. Are you trying to confirm what "Farm Boy" means? If so than thanks for the update. Im just tired of Sutter getting a player because he is a good "Farm Boy". Maybe look at his skill on the ice as the determining factor for playing on a hockey team, not where he came from. Just saying
October 21, 2010 4:20 PM ET | Delete
Skill is not everything. Tim Connolly has skill you want him? you need a mix of the Farm Boy mantality which is hard work gets me some where and skill. You asked what makes farm boys such good hockey players.. they compete, they know the meaning of hard work and they earn what they get. Maybe they are not skilled maybe they are but you know what you will get when they are on the ice and that is an honest effort
October 21, 2010 4:26 PM ET | Delete
Ok and thats great. But the Flames have too many of the same player and that's my problem. Too many farm boys and not enough skill will result in a team that works really hard but doesnt score enough goals. How is this not a problem? Honest effort? Who cares if they dont score any goals
October 21, 2010 4:32 PM ET | Delete
yeah it is not a winning formula but you asked what makes them good hockey players i was just mearly saying what provides them the spot on most teams. if they are not skilled they are great 3rd and 4th line players but as you said that does not a winning team make
October 21, 2010 4:41 PM ET | Delete
Glad we agree. Good talk.
October 21, 2010 10:01 PM ET | Delete
hold on, you guys think this team is working hard? thats a joke bigger than jokinen
