Well the first month of the season is complete and the Sabres are a .500 team. How do you think the team's Captains for October did?
Here are the stats of these players:
Player GP G A P +/- PIM PP SH GW S S%
Jochen Hecht 10 3 4 7 1 4 0 0 0 32 9.4
Henrik Tallinder 10 0 2 2 -3 10 0 0 0 6 0.0
Toni Lydman 10 0 1 1 -2 12 0 0 0 11 0.0
Each player had his ups & downs in the first month. Hecht was probally the most impressive of the bunch. Jochen played well and was one of the more consitant Sabres for the first 10 games. Tallinder looked his best while killing penalties. And Toni was well........Toni. He needs to be more consitant from here on out. Actually so does Tallinder. There is room for much improvement on the back end. And it needs to start with our #1 defensive pairing. I am looking for these guys to rebound in a big way.
My choices for November's Sabre captains are:
"C"- Brian Campbell
"A"- Jason Pomminville
"A"- Daniel Paille
Honorable mention Joche Hecht
Cambell gets the "C" in my eyes for his play at both ends. He leads the team in assits, +/-, and is tied for points. And most importnatly he is staying out of the box. Only 1 penalty so far. He has done everything asked of him & more. Darcy needs to get him locked up before it's to late. ( Or costs to much)
Pommers gets on of the 2 "A"'s. My reasoning for this is simple. He is a well balanced player. He is ranked 2nd on the team in scoring and he does it all. Jason is an important cog on the PP as well as the PK. He is a +3 on the season and hasn't commited any infraction that has landed him in the sin bin.
Finally we get to Danny Paille. This kid has been outstanding. He makes the most out of every shift. What more can you ask for. Six points from a fourth liner at this point in the season is just a bonus if you ask me. He is any coaches dream. His PK skills are great.
Jochen Hecht was getting considerable consideration to were an "A" this month but this thing is to see how differnt players respond to new things and how well they lead.
So with that being said tell me your opinions on my thoughts.
Ok, Not a bad opinion... Campbell is TIED for the lead with Connolly, who in my eyes has shown a lot in this short season so far! He is stepping up and delivering when needed most. His line w/pommer and hecht is by far our most consistent line if not the best. He has led the PP so far, and played stong on The PK. The captaincy's is not about points though. So i dont see pommer and paille getting A's anytime soon. Still a lot to be learned from the promising young stars. I personally would like to see a consistent captain, and Hecht should be it for several reasons... Mainly our best complete player! But since thats not gonna happen, my blurry opinion is as follows:C - CampbellA - HechtA - MairLook for connolly to keep coming on strong and perhaps getting a letter for Dec!
I dont think Paille has a chance, but i like the thinkingMy guess is Campbell will wear the C, with Roy and either Connolly or Goose sporting the A's
I agree that Campbell deserves a chance at the C. agree with most of your other points too. But, imho, Paille is a few years away from a letter.
Campbell CConnolly AGoose ATimmy and Brian have almost Identical stats, even on the PP. Campbell has a better /- so I give it to Him, Although I think The team is really rallying around Timmy and what he has been doing this year. Tim will be a Perm Captain before the year is out.Goose gets the other A for his hardwork and determinationGoose gets the A because
Paille, no way. I do like Pommer getting a letter, he has played well so far. What I would really like to see is Roy pulling his head out of his behind and stop whinning all the time. He could easily be a captain if he could just shut up and play. Other than that, stitch a letter on Goose's sweater.
Just a note to the Hecht should be captain because he's our most complete player opinion. Most complete player does not necessarily translate into leader.
There is more to a leader than just stats. I don't know how Paille is in the locker room but if he keeps going balls to the walls every shift then you might want to consider him to be an "A". I think this month is should be Soupy or Connolly with the "C or A" and Pommer/Paille the other "A"
i believe paille was a captain on team canada but not sure if i remember hearing it correctly last year but i agree with an A my choice for letters are C goes to mair, A goes to paille and campbell
Yeah. Hecht's only weakness could come across as being his leadership. He hasnt stepped up that much this past month in that area, when we needed him. I think he is a similar captain as Drury was. Both were perceived as quit players, but I think we dont see and hear everything.
What about Spacek?Im sure he would have had more points without the injury.
How about vanek? He's getting paid $3million per goal
My assumptions were based on a bunch of things besides stats. Hence why i picked Paille. He is a fireball on skates. Spacek will wear an "A" or "C" by seasons end. Just not now. Vanek is a bit farther away. He needs to worry about his game first then he can become a leader through his actions. I don't know the man personally but he sems like he will develope into one of those quiet leaders.
Mair- Captain- He should be the year round captain. Mair is one guy on this team that would not get intimidated just because he was wearing the 'C' (meaning he would not change his play just because he was captain.)Then the assistant captains: Vanek and Campbell- I think if one of these two guys were given the 'C' their play would be greatly affected. Vanek and Campbell are still on the young side, but you have got to start somewhere.
Spacek could wear a letter soon, but not now. Pominville's a bit young and I don't think he's vocal. Paille played well, but I don't see him getting a letter this year.Roy, TC and Goose would have to be in the running, though unless I'm much mistaken Goose and Pominville entered the big league the same year.If Vanek plays up to his contract, he'll eventually get a letter, but that doesn't seem imminent.
