Why Warrener should go

Posted 5:10 PM ET | Comments 8
I love Rhett Warrener. He battles every night. He loves Calgary. But the bottom line is; if a team wants to compete in the West, he can't be a top 6 defenseman.

Warrener will hit you hard and often, he'll rough you up against the boards every chance he gets. The problem is, he can't skate, can't pass and can't shoot. It used to work for us because if he got in trouble he'd just pin you against the boards and the opposing player couldn't go anywhere. Well, post-lockout, that's not good enough anymore, he takes too many penalties.

Lots of Flames fans will argue that he's a great penalty killer, and he is, except for when it comes to trying to clear the puck. He can't clear it and can't hang on to the puck, so a lot of times he just sends a nice little flick up to the blue line and its easily kept in. He looks better because he's on the kill with Regehr a lot, who can do the job of one and a half d-men most of the time.

So I think, yes, get rid of Warrener, but we also need to have a plan to get a puck-moving defenseman in return. I'm ready to let Giordano anchor the 3rd pairing, but the signing of Anders Erickson makes me wonder if Sutter/Keenan agree.

Warrener can bring a lot to a team, and Atlanta would be a great place for him to go. He's got a lot left, just not on our team anymore.

I would agree just for the fact he's so injury prone, however the Flames are not as deep at d as in past years. With Hale, Giordano and Erikson I think they are just waiting to see who steps up in training camp. Sarich, Regehr, Pahneuf and Aucion are locks so with all of those players it does make for one extra guy who could be moved.

Warrener for Spacek.... Do we have a deal?

SaneOpinion, I would agree that we're not as deep as we have been for sure, tht's why i'm a little surprised to hear the rumors... as for Spacek, I would take him in a second from you guys if we got Oiler spacek. But he's also a hated man in Calgary for his run on Byron Richie...

I agree with you, lepp, but I am really wondering who would take Warrener and what we could get for him. Besides the flaws you stated, the guy is seriously getting old.

I was wondering that myself... but ditching him would clear up around 2 million in cap space so I would think Sutter would make a run at a Berard or someone like that.

I personally know Rhett and him and his wife are both huge in the Calgary community. It does seem alot, paying 2.5 million for a 5-6th defencemen, who will only get you 10 points. He is great for the locker room, and is loved by the management and coaching staff. Calgary does have 4 other physical dmen and is in need of a puck moving, puck possesion player.Buffalo is the opposite boat, with a roster full of smaller, faster puck handling dmen, and in need of a tough, defence first player.

TheTiny... I certainly wouldn't take anything away from Warrener's involvement in the community or his personal well-being and I don't want to intend that in any way. Your last comment is right on the mark.
