I know what you are thinking, the NHL isn’t going anywhere. I agree with you, I know it is here to stay as well, despite all of our WHA scares during the lock-out. What I am talking about is trying to save the NHL from becoming a marginal sport. We hockey fans have to realize that we are on the fringe of truly being a major North America sport. The negative part of t...
One of the more visible changes to come out of the lockout was the institution of the shootout to decide the winner of games which remained undecided after a 4-on-4 overtime. This resulted in quite a lot of excitement for fans to be sure, but also let a few rounds of a skills competition play a large part in determining standings points for a team. The original move to ...
Well, we all saw the controversial no-goal today by Karel Rachunek of the Rangers. Whether you think it was a goal or not, the inherent problem with the process is that it's a bad rule. The purpose of the game from its inception is to use your stick to propel the puck into the net. So in my opinion, they need to legislate this concept more firmly... The rule should be...
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=2854004&type=story This is this story that brought about this little rant... Scott Burnside is a good hockey guy, let's get that out of the way. But of course there is a 'but' here. He claims that since players can pass the puck with the skates why not allow them to deflect it with their skates? My first reason on why not ...
Power forwards...huge, hulking, “whittle-guy” killers that can skate...a goalie’s worst nightmare...and supposedly, the ghost of Christmas past. The new rules adopted my “My NHL” practically sent them to their graves. At the very least, the new rules assured a long, penalty-plagued transition. Many of the typical power forwards became a liability to their team...
The off-season is fast approaching, and while I don’t want to short cut the glory of the playoffs, we’re about to be subjected to another round of rumored expansion plans and rule change proposals to boost next year’s numbers. (Remember the “buffalo” nets?) I don’t know if you were following the recent “big” news out of NASCAR, but it bears mention. (D...
Per TSN, http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=211407&hubname= In order: Penalty Shots. Really, this just brings it in line with what all of Canada has been doing for a few years now, and I agree with it. Why should you not be allowed a penalty shot when you get tackled from behind, just because the other team's player didn't wait another two-thirds of a second? A br...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE NHL

WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST THING YOU HATE ABOUT THE NHL? Today blog question is to name one thing that you hate about the NHL. Notice I said one thing; I am sure everyone could found a lot more than just one. spiegs13 One of the things that bothers me with the new rules - although it wasn't that different before - is when a player is on a mini-breaka...

Okay, I've had it with this 1pt for losing in OT/Shoot out. Officially, there are only 6 teams with losing records in the NHL. This is a joke. The NHL point system must go. I understand that they wanted to do away with ties. But this OTL crap is out of hand. Gary Bettman and the rest of these idiots who think losing in OT/Shoot out is worth a point should be shot...
Note: The following regulations are applicable to any team facing the Pittsburgh Penguins By: Gary Bettman I. Assessment of Penalties A. Penalties are assessed when a player commits: interference, roughing, cross-checking, slashing, hooking, holding, obstruction hooking, obstruction holding, fighting and instigating. (These terms will be expounded...
There's some sarcasm in the title. I know why there are so many officials but I no longer know why they are all on the ice. Maybe the NHL should consider putting an official either between the penalty boxes or between the benches. What, why? If you watch as much hockey as me you've probably noticed how manytimes the officials get in the way of the play or can't bel...

THINGS THAT HAVE TO CHANGE

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
I wrote a blog a little while back on violence in the NHL, so I thought I would hash it over again from another angle. I have heard media go over this topic over and over again; what it comes down to is the lack of respect the players have for each other. The issue that bothers me in particular is this hitting from behind, not the accidents. It’s the stick-in-the-bac...
The Islanders seem to be having the time of their lives; having a fun time enjoying playing hockey. Young players have been getting their chance in the NHL. I wonder how they feel about trying to tank every game for the rest of the season. Of late, I have heard fans yelling and being happy about losing a game, with their teams being out of the playoffs. I can understand th...
I'm not on the NHL competition committee (yet), but if I were, one area that I would want to revisit is the puck over the glass rule. It doesn't seem like the punishment fits the crime when a defenseman inadvertently clears the puck over the glass and has to sit for 2 minutes. Is that really equal to an elbow to the face or hauling down a player from behind? The idea of...

Crusading against the OT point

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
I’ve crusaded against the OT point ever since the NHL got rid of ties. Why a losing team should get anything is beyond me. So, I’ve got a plan to remedy this situation: either go back to ties, or stop giving out the loser point. The history Believe it or not, the OT point served a purpose at one time. Back when you could tie, teams were perfectly content to ...

Politics of the NHL

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
I was brought up understanding that all men are created equal, regardless of who you are. This should be true for the NHL. Regardless of whether you play for the worst team in the NHL, or the best team in the NHL, the top scorer in the league, or you struggle to get one point each season, you should be treated with the same. What I said in my introduction is not the cas...

Blindsided

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
I have been saying to anyone that will listen (not many)...for some time now...that it's not hits to the head that are the problem in the NHL, it's the blindside hits that create the most potential for injury. I'll get to that more in a second... When it comes to hits to the head, the NHL is in a very difficult spot in terms of making rules that apply specifically to...

Pre-Vacation Ranting

Posted Friday | Comments 0
I hadn't gotten into the blogging game until after this season has ended. But I have had a lot of NHL opinions bottled up inside for many years. Though most of my blogs have been (and will continue to be) based more on statistics, I figured since I leave for vacation tomorrow let me just pop the cork and let some bottled NHL rants come flying out. No stats, just unfilte...

You and your damn rules!!

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
New rules are part of the NHL’s mandate to increase scoring and it’s fan base. New rules make traditionalists cringe and create frustrated feeling in fans that have already bought in. In the end the idea is that the league feels scoring equals entertainment which equals money. How are the nets? Too big? Too small? Shrink the goalie equipment, enlarge the nets, creat...

The Resurrection of Hockey?

The NHL's Fighting Issue

Posted Monday | Comments 0
A couple of years ago I wrote an article on the NHL’s concussion issue. As the NHL seems to become more of a “do what we say league,” their latest installment of rules has me scratching my head. Last week Darren Dreger of TSN reported that the linesmen have been instructed to stop a fight if the players remove their helmets beforehand. Earlier in the season the NH...
I was a goalie. In the age of saw dust, horse hair and leather. My chest protector was a glorified catchers chest protector. My arm pats were not much better. My leg pads just rose to the bottom of my quads (and I was considered a cheater for that in my day). In my pads and gear I was about 3 inches wider at the shoulders or across the chest. Fast forward 30 years. ...
